The Devon region

The South Hams is located in southernmost Devon, between the river Dart and the river Tamar and south of Dartmoor. The area is dominated by lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, and stunning coastline with sandy beaches and cliffs between the estuaries. The area is also remains surprisingly peaceful.

The area has beautiful towns including the historic Port of Dartmouth, ancient Totnes and the picturesque fishing town of Salcombe. There are so many wonderful beaches including sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton Sands long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs at Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; and of course the amazing sandy beaches of East Portlemouth, North Sands and South Sands. There is also Thurlestone and Bigbury, 'and the "1930's" Burgh Island.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with its Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers go up and down the Kingsbridge estuary and the River Dart between Dartmouth and Totnes.

From Totnes and Ivybridge to Dartmouth and Salcombe, The South Hams sits between the moors and the sea providing you with the best of South Devon’s rolling countryside and 60 miles of dramatic and ever-changing coastline. There are six historic towns that collectively form The South Hams each with their own individual charm and unique characteristics; Dartmouth, Salcombe, Ivybridge, Totnes, Kingsbridge and Modbury. Meander along the pretty narrow streets and historic harbours and you will find a welcoming selection of gift shops, boutiques, galleries, restaurants and bars.

Salcombe is one of the most beautifully sited small towns in Britain, at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary, a yacht haven with creeks, sandy bays. Waterside pubs, nice shops. Boats to hire, fishing, superb National Trust cliff walks/gardens; museum, tennis, outdoor swimming pool (in summer); pedestrian ferry to East Portlemouth (lovely beaches, The Venus Café and Takeaway). Thurlestone (golf), 6 miles.
