Liguria extends along the Mediterranean coast from the French border at Menton to the estuary of the river Magra, south of the city of La Spezia. It is the most popular part of Italy with Italian holidaymakers and remains unspoiled and pristine. Known as the Italian Riviera, and largely unknown outside the country it offers a unique opportunity to experience a holiday as the Italians do, enjoying the fine food and wine, the beautiful climate and the wonderful beaches. You can marvel at the Cinque Terre, soak up the medieval atmosphere in Sarzana, visit the Roman ruins at Luni, and perhaps check out the Luni vinyards while about it!
San Terenzo is where the poets Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron lived until Shelley's death by drowning. Now known as the Gulf of Poets, this area offers an immense range of attractions and facilities and is a most convenient base for exploring the Cinque Terre and the renaissance cities of Tuscany, enjoying the opera at the Torre del Lago Puccini Festival, experiencing the joys of the spotless beaches and the blue of the Mediterrean while dining on the best seafood and crisp wines to be found in Italy. Markets and festivals abound, ranging from the popular Saturday morning market in Lerici to the gastronomic festas in Montemarcello and Sarzana.
All this can be managed without a car, thanks to the excellent bus and train service.
