The Italian Lakes are a little slice of paradise. Elegant ribbons of blue water stretch out ahead, folded into the sun-baked foothills, with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps.
Lake Como offers hidden treasures just waiting for the visitor to discover them: charming corners forgotten by time, lakeside villages where nothing seems to have changed for centuries.
It is steeped in history with an immense collection of churches, architectural masterpieces and works of art covering the centuries. The lake is situated in a basin surrounded by wooded mountains, and offers an extremely varied landscape, with its' shores featuring a succession of pastures, and woods as well as harsh and impressive rock formations.
All this alongside elegant, lakeside villas with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity and chic resorts such as Varenna, Bellagio, Menaggio and Como itself.
Warming, in spriing and graced with natural beauty, the lakes are still a place to draw breath and wonder. Lake Como, oriented north-south, ringed by characterful old villages often wedged onto narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water. Those classic lake images of flower strewn balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas can be found here in abundance. Dotted around and between the lakes are some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.
The most romantic and picturesque villages on the lake are Santa Maria Rezzonico, Varenna (15 min by ferry) & Bellagio (8 min by ferry), Lenno (visit Villa Balbianello, location for 007's Casino Royale as well as Villa Gaeta, right here in Menaggio) & Laglio (where George Clooney owns Villa Oleandra).
From the hillside residence guests can reach the lakeside centre of Argegno in just 5 minutes by car. The popular visitor town offers many picturesque views from the gushing Mountain River and ancient bridge crossings to the vibrant piazzas with cafes, bars and restaurants which lead to quieter and charming medieval passageways and areas of the town which are just waiting to be explored!
The town offers a range of local amenities and offers some very good restaurants to enjoy including La Piazzetta. From the town guests can also easily use the ferry and bus service or travel by car to explore the nearby towns and also enjoy other marvellous dining experiences at Il Crotto Platani and Gatto Nero.
Staying in Argegno along the desirable western shore of Lake Como also means that guests are within easy reach of the cosmopolitan delights of Como city which include the famous Duomo cathedral, its buzzing Piazzas, the wide variety of designer and high street shopping boulevards and Villa Olmo which plays host in its splendid rooms and gardens to many art and musical events and festivals each year. A train service also operates frequently to Milan from the city, making it an ideal destination to explore the Lombardy region from.
This picturesque and ancient village is crossed by the Telo stream which splits into two parts, after falling down from a the towns ravine. The two are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch. From Argegno, it is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881m), which is situated on a plateau that enjoys a beautiful view of the lake. From here, it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road, which runs along Val d'Intelvi, also starts from Argegno and after following this road for about about 16 km, you will arrive at Lanzo.
The best way to appreciate Argegno is to walk up one of the narrow lanes. Most are paved with intersecting fan pattern of small square stones typical in much of the area. This area is almost entirely residential but the walkways are impeccably maintained with potted red geraniums and colourful flowers contrasting with the ancient brickwork and facades.
