The Abruzzo region

Abruzzo is a region situated in the centre of Italy with a coastline on the Adriatic and with the highest mountain in the Apennines and with the southernmost known glacier in Europe.
It is one of the only places in Italy where you can enjoy the mountains and within one hour drive enjoy the beach too. It is a very central region with easy accessibility to Rome, Naples and the rest of the centre of Italy. Abruzzo is one of the most unspoiled areas of Italy with three national parks and one regional park, the perfect environment for wildlife to thrive.
Whilst exploring this beautiful region do not be surprised if you see wild boars or deer.
Over 30% of the Abruzzo region is protected and those areas are home to rare species like the brown bear, the wolf and the chamois.
It is not just a place for beautiful scenery but it is the ideal location to discover and to have a real taste of the Italian traditional lifestyle; people from Abruzzo (Abruzzesi) maintained their individual and unique gastronomic history and this is the reason why you will be spoiled for choice.
Just a few of the typical dishes you should try not to miss out on are maccheroni alla chitarra, arrosticini, porchetta, agnello (grilled lamb especially during the Easter period), pecorino abruzzese and lots and lots more. Probably one of the most recognisable product from this region is the well know Montepulciano d’Abruzzo, the wine made all over Abruzzo.

The apartment Vista Majella is located in Gessopalena a lovely village in the province (county) of Chieti. It is ideal for winter holidays to go sking in the Roccaraso ski resort only 30 minutes away and ideal for a summer holiday as it is only 30 minutes drive from the closest beach.
The word Gesso in Italian means chalk and the name Gessopalena comes from the chalk outcrop in the ancient village right beside the new village. The old village was destroyed during the second world war but it can still be visited today and from where you have an amazing vista of the whole valley, the mountain Majella and on a clear sunny day the sea.
The village square (Piazza Roma) is the centre of every activity in the village, with a couple of nice bars, children play area, a lovely fountain and the main Romanic Church.
People from Gessopalena (Gessani) are well known for being very welcoming, easy going and friendly. Gessopalena hosts some amazing festivals during the summer, the patron festival for example held in June and August where for three days there is outdoor live music, food and wine stalls (arrosticini and porchetta have to be tried!!) with a wonderful atmosphere with lots of locals from the area.
In this area you can avail of a number of outdoor activities including horse riding, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, swimming (outdoor and indoor swimming pools),motocross, hunting, rafting, climbing and many more.

Gessopalena is in the valley Sangro-Aventino which comprises different villages easily accessible from the apartment.
Casoli is one of the biggest villages in the area with wonderful boutiques to do some authentic Italian shopping, with a lovely Castle situated at the top of the village and it is called the town of olives (Citta’ dell’olio) because of its quality olive oil production. There is also a beautiful lake surrounded by forest and mountains where you can enjoy fishing and picnics. Roccascalegna is the village right beside Gessopalena and it can be viewed from the apartment. It has the most beautiful Castle in the area and it is opened to tourists during the summer. In Lama dei Peligni you should visit the famous cave Grotta del Cavallone.
Fara san Martino is well renowned for its pasta production (De Cecco, Cocco etc) but it worth a visit for its amazing mountain trail through La Gola di Fara San Martino.
If you would like to go for a day trip you should not miss a visit to the ''Isole Tremiti'', lovely islands across the bay of Pescara.
