The Basque Country region

The gite is situated in the Basque area just on the border with the Bearn. The area is a mixture of rolling hills and high mountains. It's a great location to come at any time of the year. The scenery is stunning even out of season; Autumn is normally warm and great for walkers. Hill walks in the Baretous valley are highly recommended which are more gentle than some of the mountain walks. Spring/Autumn, Iraty (40) mins is very popular with bird watchers at Ochagavia, near Iraty. It is a major transit point for many migrating birds. It is a great place for bird watching; eagles and lots of vultures and other birds of prey. There are also some popular walking trails at different levels in the mountains at Iraty/Issarbe with fantastic mountain views. Normally in the summer you can hire electric cycles - thoroughly recommended and great fun! There's one of the best restaurants in the area at Larrau, a pretty mountain village. Just south of Larrau, a road meaners over the mountains into Spain (closed in Winter). Its a very picturesque route and it takes you to many charming Spanish villages decked with geraniums - you might see wild horses on the way there.! Ahusky is a beautiful place to walk or just to soak up the views on a clear day and it has a super restaurant overlooking the mountains. Summer is sunny and balmy; so the time for relaxation around the pool soaking in the view and watching the birds of prey. Enjoy the tranquility and the beautiful views doing absolutely nothing. In the summer the pool has sun from 8am - 8pm or later. Perhaps have a BQ and a glass of wine? Relax on the beaches on the Atlantic coast; Biarritz, St.Jean de Lux, Guethary, visit the interesting old centre of Bayonne and Anglet (with iceskating all year round) or the Spanish beaches, notably San Sebastian (2hrs). All these beaches are possible in a day. The town of Pamplona is about 2 hours away. Winter is the time for lovers of the white powdery stuff. The nearest ski resort is La Pierre St.Martin which is 45mins from the cottage. They have a website and webcam so you can keep up to date with the weather conditions, There's normally skiing from December to March/April. There are other Nordic resorts close by where you can also snowshoe, sledge and go cross country skiing. Also in August the ski lift is normally open so you can get to the top of the mountain easily!

Further away there is the Pyrenees National Park, the Aspe Valley which is done easily on a day out - there are lovely walks, picnic areas, great restaurants and a park with bears etc. In the Aspe Valley you can do hang glying. Salies de Bearn, is a pretty spa town, a mini Venice, which is a super place to go to indulge yourself in the very warm waters and enjoy the relaxation of the waterfalls, power showers and bubble beds and the sauna/ jacuzzi. Salies also has a golf course. At Sauveterre, there is white water rafting and beauiful views of the pyrenees from the medieval ramparts. There's plenty to do - you can visit the holy town of Lourds and the Appold Planetarium on a day trip. You can visit the ancient town of Jaca in Spain which has authentic Tapas bars selling fabulous Spanish wine. If you're more adventurous there's the opportunity of experiencing hang gliding or rock climbing or experience the thrill of a train that goes high up into the mountains - the highest in Europe.

Tardets is a bastide dating from the 17th Century, a very unique mountain town on a prettty river where you can fish or stroll along or have a picnic on it's banks. There's a children's play area in the centre of Tardets. There are 3 bar/restaurants. Other amenities include a tourist office, beauty salon, chemist, small supermarkets, banks, bakers.

The cottage is situated in the village of Lichans amidst rolling hills. It is a working farming village, mostly sheep for the local brebis cheese and cows. There is a stream running through the village and a river for fishing close to the gite. There are plenty of local walks without having to get your car out!

Normally towards the end of FebruaryMarch there is a very big carnival where everyone is in fancy dress and in August there's a summer fete. There's a local fete in our village of Lichans in June normally with lots of live music. We have a very good local restaurant, at 2km and it's wonderful to relax outside under the shade of the plane trees and enjoy good wine and food. In the summer they normally do Pizzas to take away. Close to Tardets there is a mountain 'La Madelaine' which you can climb by car and from where you can get a unique glimpse of the chaine of the pyrenees on a clear day. It's spectacular on a clear day to see sunrise or sunset and very memorable! Behind the cottage there is a hill to climb if you fancy before breakfast! There are two dramatic gorges nearby one of which is the popular swing bridge. There's a cave close by called 'La Verna' which has only just been opened to the public. It is one of the largest underground caves in the world. You can explore the cave but you need to make a reservation. At Aramits (l5 mins) there's an adventure park for children with activites such as rope walks, ladders and bungee jumping.

During the Spring/Summer there is entertainment; jazz, classical music, Basque singing. Also at Trois Ville there is a 17th century chateau. It was owned by the captain of the Musketeers (do they say!). They usually have one musical evening and it's open to the public on certain days. At Mauleon you can buy the original espadrilles shoes and there is normally entertainment in the castle during the summer. Also a car rally at the first weekend of September - 'Rallye des Cimes'.
