The Island of Gozo region

Gozo - an escape destination at any time of year !

Located just 25 minutes from Malta, the island of Gozo is a timeless place where traditional customs prevail. With its spectacular beaches, world heritage sites, lovely walking trails, historic museums, traditional food and unmatched diving experience the island is fast becoming a prime Mediterranean destination.

The charm of Gozo is apparent the moment you arrive. Largely untouched by tourism, sustained by the land and the sea, the island offers much in the way of peace, tranquility and a chance to really get away from it all.

Being greener, more rural and smaller than mainland Malta, Gozo is one of the most scenic and unspoiled islands in the world. Over the years the island has maintained much of its original character and remained an undiscovered destination. It offers a perfect tranquil base for rest and relaxation. The rhythms are dictated by the seasons, fishing and agriculture.

A popular nickname of Gozo is the Isle of Calypso, derived from the location of Ogygia in Greek mythological poem Homer's Odyssey. In the myth, the island was controlled by nymph Calypso who detained the hero of the story Odysseus there as prisoner of love for seven years; Gozo is thought to be modern day Ogygia.

The island itself has a population of around 31,000 people and its inhabitants are known as Gozitans . It is rich in historical locations such as the Ggantija temples which, along with the Megalithic Temples of Malta, are the world's oldest free-standing structures and also the world's oldest religious structures.

Its rugged landscape and spectacular coastline await exploration. Choose from rocky inlets to red sand beaches or sail, snorkel, dive and fish. Gozo has some of the Mediterranean‚??s best dive sites. Not to mention a nightlife and cultural calendar all its own, and some great dining out.

The village of Qala is a mere 10 minute drive from Victoria, Gozo√Ę??s capital. Being the closest to the rest of the Maltese archipelago, the rocky hillsides of Qala enjoy an unobstructed view of the islands of Malta and Comino. Breathtaking scenes can be enjoyed, among other places, from the Qala Belvedere and from the small courtyard in front of the church known as II-Madonna tal-Blat (Saint Mary of the Rocks).

Except for a few sheltered inlets, like the popular Hondoq ir-Rummien beach, Qala√Ę??s coastline is a rocky trek to which nature and history both have contributed a great deal. Natural gifts include several caves, the prettiest of which is Ghar Minka, which is accessible only by boat. Historical works are mainly defensive structures designed to deter enemy landings. Foremost among these is St. Anthony√Ę??s Battery (1732), known locally as it-Trunciera. This is one of the works of the Knights that transformed Malta from a pirate haven into an island fortress.

For centuries, Qala had an agricultural and fishery based economy. Today Qala has a service oriented economy in the area of construction, tourism and crafts. Qala has a police station, football ground, leisure park, playing field, a variety of shops including bars, social and sportive clubs, restaurants, groceries, confectionery and also a pharmacy. The core of this village is its main square which is full of restaurants and bars which keep this area alive in the evenings almost everday. Zerniq is just a 7 minute walk away from the square.
