ROUFFIAGUET is located near the borders of the Dordogne, Haute Vienne and Correze. ROUFFIAGUET is ideally placed for exploring the many places of interest in the locality, be they archaeology sites, historic chateaux, caves, surprising gardens, canoeing, walking, cycling, fishing, or simply picturesque villages and countryside to chill out and unwind in. Situated in gently rolling countryside adjacent to the Lac de Rouffiac and secluded in 4 hectares of woodland and meadows, ROUFFIAGUET offers all the tranquillity needed for a restful holiday and an ideal base from which to explore or simply soak up the sun and relax. The pool (late June, July & August) is 12m x 5m x 1.4 so plenty of space to exercise or float around after a days sight seeing! The lake is at the bottom of the lane. It is 5.5km to walk round. It has a sandy beach and a restaurant (July/Aug). There are plenty of restaurants in the surrounding villages and the local town. The market town of St Yrieix (famous for the fine white clay used in the production of the renown porcelain of Limoges) is 9 miles north with a delightful old centre. Larger market towns are Limoges to the north, Brive to the south east, south west is Perigueux and Sarlat to the south. Combining history, picturesque beauty and thriving markets are the towns of Montignac and Brantome approximately 45 minutes car journey away.

The region immediately around ROUFFIAGUET is known for it's cattle, apple orchards, chestnut and walnut plantations and the Perigordine gourmet delights of foie gras and canard. You could stay for 2 weeks and still not see all there is in the area so we hope you will be back for more! Ideal for young couples or empty nesters!

We expect you to leave the gîte clean for our next guests but if you don't want the hassle, we will clean it for you for 25€.

The Dordogne region

The area boasts many places of interest, both to the locality and on a national scale. Archaeological sites compete with spectacular chateaux and a broad variety of ornamental gardens, each one markedly different from the next.

Prices for entrance to each vary from 8 to 12 Euros. Some offer guided tours while others allow exploration at your own pace with an information sheet/audio guide (both in English if required) to assist your visit.

Within daily travelling distance is the UNESCO World Heritage site Valle de la Vzre with numerous prehistoric sites and caves near Les Eyzies.

It is almost impossible to travel in the area without passing a chateau and many are open to the public and have an interesting history to disclose. Here is just a sample of those worthy of a viewing:

Jumilac Le Grande is probably the closest to ROUFFIAGUET and dates, in part, from the XIII Century. As well as daytime tours, an evening tour by candle light is offered, with the guides dressed in period costume. There are 2 pleasant short walks adjacent to the chateau.

Pompadour is an elegant chateau in a central location within the charming town of the same name. As stated above, it is the home of the National Stud and its grounds are in the form of a race course and show jumping ground. There are often events organised for the equestrian fraternity.

Hautefort is probably the most spectacular of chateaux dating from the XVII century and includes parkland and formal gardens high above the picturesque village around its perimeter.

Others of interest are Coussac-Bonneval (XII century), Excideuill (X century), Bourdeilles feudal fortress, Castelnaud feudal castle (XII century) with a museum of War in the Middle Ages, and Cammarque where the ruins of a village lay hidden by vegetation for 350 years. There is also some evidence of troglodyte dwellings in the rocks around this chateau.
