The Ionian Islands is an archipelago that sweeps down the west coast of mainland Greece and includes Corfu, Paxi, Lefkada, Ithaca, Kefalonia and Zakynthos. Their unique natural beauty with the never- ending olive groves, traditional fishing or mountain villages and iridiscent waters of the Ionian Sea as well as the distinct local traditions embrace all visitors!
Each island has something special to present in architecture and culture- the remaining influences of the former Venetian, French or British invading forces.
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands and is considered as the jewel of the Ionian Sea. The island is generously gifted by nature, a place with rare geological phenomena, mysterious caves, and subterranean water with superb beaches, traditional architecture and rich archaeological finds.
Karavados village is located southwest of Kefalonia, approximately 10km/ 7miles south of the capital, Argostoli. Villa Ianthe itself is built in a beautiful location about 500m inland and in the greater area one will find numerous stunning beaches, some of which are provided with water sports facilities.
The broader Karavados area offers many options for sightseeing as there is a considerable number of attractions both of historical and natural interest. We suggest you visit:
•The Venetian fortress of Saint George, which was built in 1504 and is located on a hill above the village of Peratata, 5 minutes drive away from our estate.
•The Minoan tombs in Mazarakata.
•The National Park of Mount Ainos which was created in 1962 to protect the indigenous specimen of elati and its rich fauna. The Park also shelters the famous Kefalonian Wild Horses.
•The Monastery of Saint Gerasimos, the patron Saint of Kefalonia, located in Omala, 13km away.
•The Archaeological, Historical and Cultural Museums in Argostoli are also worth visiting as they all display interesting exhibits from pre-historic times.
During your stay if you wish to further explore the island we recommend the following outdoor activities:
•Horse riding in Ainos
•Private boat hiring
Supplementary information can be provided on request.
The traditional way of fun is characterised by the numerous feasts organised every year for the celebrartion of the local Saints in various villages all over the island. Some of the most important feasts you should not miss out take place in July or August; for example the feast of St. Gerasimos on the 16th August, that of Virgin Mary on the 15th and the Robola Wine festival in mid August.
