The Calabria region

There are many interesting places to see within a short drive from Amusa Mare. We have listed below some of these places which we recommend you visit while you are here.

This old hilltop village is very popular with tourists as the views of the Ionian coastline are spectacular. It has some cafes in the main square that you can sit and have lunch. To get to Gerace from Amusa Mare follow the SS1 06 south to Locri then follow the signs for Gerace.

Situated on the west coast approx. 75 minutes drive from Amusa Mare. Built on a rock it is worth the trip just to see it and the views of the Mediterranean sea. The main streets in the town centre have plenty of restaurants and gift shops. If you can wait around to see the sun set it is quite spectacular. Just be careful driving back in the dark as the twisting roads out of Tropea can be a bit hairy. The best way back is to travel north back towards Pizzo and pick up the A3 south to Rosarno.

Good to stop off and take in the views of the coastline on your way to Tropea

Vibo Marina
Again an nice stop off on your way to Tropea to take in the views and to see how the other half live with some of the boats in the marina.

Reggio di Calabria
The main port crossing to Sicily. Nice to visit and have lunch in one of the restaurants that are situated on the sea front looking over to Sicily. The best and quickest way to get to RC from Amusa Mare is to travel back up to Rosarno and pick up the A3 going south to RC. This will take approx. 80 mins were the coastal road will take you approx. 2 hours.

Marina di Caulonia

There are many good restaurants within a short drive from Amusa Mare. Listed below are the ones that we have tried and recommend either for lunch or dinner.

La Pineta
Located next to the Club Hotel Kennedy on the SS1 06 coastal road. Situated on the stretch of road between Roccella Jonica and Marina di Gioiosa Jonica. (Try the Pizza’s they are excellent). After dinner take a wander into the hotel, have a drink and sit outside near the pool.

La Casina
Located on the same stretch of road as La Pineta approx. 200m further along. This restaurant specialise in fish dishes but if fish is not your dish you will also find meat, pasta and pizza on the menu. Recommended for a special night out as it is a bit more upmarket and a little more expensive.

Barone Rosso
Located in Gioiosa old town. The restaurant is a 20 min drive from Amusa Mare and a bit harder to find but worth a visit. It sits on the hill on the right hand side overlooking the town. The views are stunning and worth visiting for lunch or dinner. Best way to find it is to go to the Gioiosa market which is on every Sunday morning and ask for directions from there.

Restaurant Paraponza
Located approx. 5km outside Marina di Caulonia on the SS1 06 going north. The restaurant sits above a small garden centre. Nice, friendly atmosphere with menus in English and Italian.

Ontario Place
Located in Gioiosa old town and is on the same road as Barone Rosso. This restaurant is famous for the size of pizzas that they make. Just remember, one grande pizza will easily feed 4/5 people.

Located in Marina di Gioiosa Jonica at the corner of the Junction of the SS1 06 and the road leading to Gioiosa old town. Ideal place and setting for lunch, dinner or just an ice cream.
