Cardiff City Centre is a haven for serious shoppers with John Lewis and the St David’s one and two shopping centres. For Golfers, the Celtic Manor resort is around 45 minutes drive with it’s Michelin Star Restaurant and SPA.The Designer Outlet Village is located at McCarthur Glen, Bridgend.
Barry Island has two beaches-Jackson’s Bay (the smaller of the two beaches) is backed by cliffs, so is also secluded. It’s certainly different from the fish’n’chips bustle of Whitmore Bay (the main Beach and a short walk). View the boats in the little marina that’s been built and, also see some of the larger ships. The sand is very soft and the water suitable for swimming and paddling. Just above the bay on the cliff top is a pleasant area laid out as lawns, are the remains of the original chapel dedicated to the Celtic Saint Baruc, after whom Barry is named.
Whitmore Bay is well featured in ‘Gavin and Stacey’ with amusement arcades, featured café bars, small shops and Gavin and Stacey tours. Both Jackson’s Bay and Whitmore Bay are sandy beaches with coastal walks, pub's, gastro pubs, restaurants, and local small shops.
There are excellent bus and train services (including Thomas the Tank engine seasonal tours) from the island (Barry Island station is 20 minutes to Cardiff Central station)
Nearest pool is the Barry leisure centre with other leisure amenities. The Waverley and Balmoral paddle steamers operate site seeing trips around Flatholme and Steepholme islands from Penarth Pier and day cruises to Ilfracombe.
