Villa Marina is in the Razes area , one of the most beautiful in France and home of Malpere wine.Summers are warm with clear blue sky's and light breeze's due to its proximity to the rolling foothills of the Pyrenee's and so it is rarely too hot .Autumns and Springs are temperate . Winter is sharp and clear as befits it's proximity to the skiing areas.Steeped in the history of the Cathars the immediate area is one of the most historic in France and includes the world heritage site of Carcassonne, the medieval town of Mirepoix , the marvellous Castelnaudary built on the famous Canal du Midi .the spa's at Alet les Bains , kayaking, canoeing and rafting at Couiza and the mysterious Rennes les Chateau so inextricably part of the Da Vinci Code. The novels of Kate Mosse ( Labyrinth etc) are all based on this magnificent and varied region.Lightly populated outside historic circular villages and towns, crossed by the Canal du Midi , ringed by the Pyrenee's and the Black Mountains and with it's gentle hills covered in a constant tapestry of sunflowers , vineyards and tree's this is an ideal place to relax , tour around when you feel up to it , golf , boat on the Canal du Midi , visit Andorra and the picturesque villages of the Pyrenee's or nip down to the Mediterranian coast at Narbonne , Agde, Collioure or cross into northern Spain and still be home for tea ! In winter , the glorious colours and proximity of top class family friendly ski resorts attract many who wish to ski but also to enjoy the countryside , cities, shopping and cuisine.
For the wine lover this area is ideal . It's plentiful Chateaux and Domains , each with their own history and individual wines, are always open to visitors where you can taste their famous wines and purchase cheaply.Famous for it's markets , all of the surrounding towns have superbly organised markets on different days and you can buy meat , preserves and cheese from the mountains, wine's and blanquette ( local champagne and very good value) from the area and delicacies from the Basque country as well as pottery , clothes, art and anitiques.Visits to Carcassonne's ancient "Le Cite "are a liftetime experience for young and old as you enter across the drawbridge, walk the battlements and lunch royally in the central square protected by the towers and walls of your very own Camelot. Mirepoix and its Monday morning market is not to be missed as you look aroung the surrounding buildings and realise that you are in a genuine medieval market place which has not changed for hundereds of years. These plus the bustling Limoux , Castelnaudary and Bram on the Canal du Midi are all within 30 mins of Villa Marina or if you feel more energetic and wish to follow the trail of the historic Cathars then an hour brings you to their most famous castles or up the mountains to Couiza , Rennes les Chateau etc. or you can take a boat along the canal, meander through the vineyards from village to village, walk in the Pyrenee's mountain trails ,go horse riding , kayaking or rafting within 40 mins , or just travel the 5 mins to play tennis in nearby Montreal. Festivals abound all through the year with peak activity in May to October with the famous Festival of Carcassonne in July ,one of the many highpoints. For many , this is a wonderful area to rest , relax , get away from it all and to experience the true France and the wonderful and hospitable local people. The village of Cailhavel is typical of small working villages in the Razes which are surrounded by vineyards and linked directly by road and walking routes to larger towns such as Montreal ( 5 mins) and Limoux ( 20 mins).Sitting by the pool of Villa Marina or having a glass of local wine beside the vineyard while looking at the Pyrenee's will chill out the most pressurised visitor and be an enduring haven in your heart long after you go home.
