Clonard is a great location for the tourist. It is bursting with history. In the 16th century Clonard had a very big monastery and it was a centre of great learning. St. Finian of Clonard is the patron saint and many of our great saints were educated in Clonard, St. Columba of Iona, St Brendan of Clonmacnoise to name just a couple. Regrettably there are no remains of the original monastery left, but there are several sacred burial places and St Finians Holy Well.
The Royal Canal runs close to "Iona" and it is a wonderful amenity also. The visitor is welcome to walk its banks or do some fishing and you will not be interrupted by scores of people except maybe the odd local person out walking the dog!.
The area is rural and plenty of sheep rearing and cattle rearing farming is all round us. Also, we are not very far from the Curragh of KIldare which is renowned for its race horse breeding with visitor attractions like the National Stud in Kildare town. "Iona" is located in County Meath and we border the counties of Kildare, Westmeath and Offaly all offering their own particular charms......lakes, rivers and plains.
We also have plenty of golf courses in the locality.
