The Western Norway region

An advantage of Eldhuset, in addition to the fine building and beautiful location with very good opportunities for local outdoor activities, is its location in the middle of a district that has several of the top tourist attractions of Norway. Therefore, Eldhuset in addition to being a charming place to stay and enjoy local activities (see area description) is an nearly ideal 'base' for day-trips to various attractions in the region.
Sights in the area: There are many, some inland ('fjords and mountains'), some out towards the coastal communities and the ocean. . Inland can be mentioned:
Driving in the fjord district, with the high mountains towering over the fjords surrounded by small, well-kept farms and a narrow strip of grassland and forests is a great experience of both nature and culture. Trollveggen (said to be the highest vertical mountain wall in Europe) and the Troll Road/Trolls' path (Trollstigen) (check on the internet) can be visited in combination, 45 min - 1 hr from Eldhuset, near Andalsnes. Both are among the top sights in Norway. The Troll Road is part of the 'Golden Route' from Andalsnes via Trollstigen and Gudbrandsjuvet in Valldal to Geiranger - high steep mountains, dramatic curved roads clinging to the mountainsides and dramatic, beautiful fjord landscapes. Geiranger with its narrow fjord and waterfalls surrounded by high mountains is one of the most famous tourist sites of Norway. After arriving in Geiranger by the Golden Route or by the tourist car ferry on the fjord from Valldal, one may drive up the steep, curved road leading eastwards from Geiranger, to the top of the mountain Dalsnibba. A full day trip from Eldhuset is the famous glacier Briksdalsbreen. - Places like Eikesdal (highest waterfall in Europe, beautiful lake) and the mountain road over to/from Sunndalsora are less famous but also very beauttiful and dramatic. All these places are 1 - 2 hrs away, suitable for half- or full day trips. Andalsnes is has a very famous mountain full-day hiking route nearby - Romsdalseggen. From the very town center of Andalsnes one may hike about 1 hr on a well-prepared path (in part stone steps made by sherpas from Nepal) up the mountain side to an airy viewing platform 'Rampestreken'.
The 3 small cities of the district all lie near the ocean: Aalesund (50 min) is famous for its Jugend architecture buildings and aquarium and beautiful panorama from the restaurant on top of the 'city mountain' Aksla. Its airport Vigra has direct flights to London, Amsterdam, Copenhagen and the Baltic countries. Molde (15 min + ferry 35 min) is very famous for its beautiful location by the fjord and the view eastwards to the long chain of mountains, both from the city itself and even better from the top of the mountain Varden easily reached by car. From Molde there it is less than 1 hr to drive to another of Norway's very top attractions - the Atlantic Road. On an island along it is the old fishing community Håholmen, and not far from the northern end of the 'ocean' part of the road, on Averøya, is a beautiful old wooden stave church from about 1100. You can continue to Kristiansund, another 45 min, interesting by itself, and you can go by scheduled boat from Kristiansund to the little island of Grip, a tiny old fishing community also with a beautiful little old stave church. Molde has a large, well-reputed international jazz festival, and both Alesund and Molde have high-quality local museums, focusing on local wood house as well as boat building traditions. Near Molde is Bud, with a World War II museum and extensive German fortifications. It may also be interesting to visit some of the island communities, like Sandøya and Finnøy, and in particular Ona with its famous lighthouse. You may want to check these places on the internet to get more information. 'Romsdal' may also be a good search term for the district. As mentioned, in addition to its own qualitiues Eldhuset has a perfect location for hald-day or day-trips to sample the mentioned sights. The hosts at Eldhuset will assist with practical information as well as historical and cultural information.

Outdoor activities
Fishing: the log cottage Eldhuset has a beautiful location on the rim of small hill, a minute or two from the boathouse and fishing pier by the fjord. We are located in a bay and have several hundred meters of private shore. The beach is fine for swimming in warm weather, and children love to play at the beach. Fjord fishing is a popular activity. The stone pier is very suitable for rod fishing, and we also have for free use two classic wooden rowing boats and a glass fiber boat, and two kayaks. A glass fiber boat (16 ft) with an outboard engine (5 hp) can be rented (15 EUR/day). However, some of the best fishing in the fjord is just off our boathouse. Fishing gear and floating devices for all body sizes are included in the cabin rent. With the boat with an outboard engine, it is possible to go to the mouth of the fjord to deeper waters (some 8 km). If you want more adventure, day-trips for deep-water ocean fishing are arranged by tourist agencies in Molde and Alesund, each place about 1 hr by car (Alesund) or car+ferry/boat (Molde) from Eldhuset.
Walking and mountain hiking: A popular activity with no need for a car, are short walks on the farm and hiking the forested mountain side (well marked paths). If you like, you can walk up to our small old mountain cabin (about 1 1/2 hrs) - you can choose between a gravel road (where cars can drive) and the rougher but very nice and romantic old path along the small river. The grass-roofed mountain cabin has a wonderful view and is nice as a resting place. For the very romantic not afraid of somewhat primitive conditions (wood stove and open fireplace, no electricity, no running water, dry toilet in the outhouse) who want to enjoy the summer night with a full moon over the mountains, we make the beds and bring what you need to stay till next day. From the mountain cabin, just above where the forest stops, several nice hiking trips on the flatter mountain terrain or to local mountain tops are possible. Further, within a 10-15 min drive from Eldhuset, many other hiking trips to waterfalls and mountain tops with gorgeous views can be done - we provide information and detailed route descriptions and maps. Some trips can be done in part or even fully on gravel roads, and bicycles (up to 4) are included in the rent so that one can combine biking for some kilometers with mountain walking. We assist with bringing you to the trailheads and back.
Horseback riding: Tresfjord is a center for breeding and training Icelandic horses and also other horses, and several horse farms offer horseback riding, from the very small activities for kids to full-day (and even overnight) mountain riding expeditions.
The hosts at Eldhuset will give more information, as well as practical advise.
