The house is 40 minutes drive from Kandy; down a n amazing road through the tea...the views are breathtaking! The last 4K of the road is pretty bumpy, but this gives one the perfect excuse to drive slowly and watch local village life; the children playing cricket, the women picking tea, village shops and people bathing in the hillside waterfalls ... wonderful! As you pass by,people wave and smile, and you get the feeling that you are a welcome friend! Not many tourists get the chance to experience this sense of 'belonging'. Jungle Tide is a truly magical place!

Central Province is in Sri Lanka's hill country, famous for its tea estates, mountains and waterfalls. The climate is cooler and less humid than Colombo, the coast or the north, with warm days and pleasant evenings all year round. Places of interest easily reachable from Jungle Tide include Peenawella Elephant Orphanage, Dambulla Cave Temples, Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, elephant-back trekking at Habarana and Victoria Golf Course as well as those in or near Kandy itself - see below.
Kandy is the 'cultural capital' of Sri Lanka and a World Heritage City. The city centre includes theTemple of the Tooth, the holiest place of Buddhist worship in the island. There is also Kandy Lake and a nature reserve close to the centre as well as excellent shopping and other city facilities including cricket test matches. Just down the road are the splendid Peradeniya Botanic Gardens, a great place to spend a day and have a picnic. Kandy was the last part of Sri Lanka to be taken by the British and its history and culture include spectacular dance and the annual Perahera festival - the world's biggest street parade - in July or August depending on the full moon.
