Sicily is a beautiful land full of history that from the Greek colonization, and until the Bourbon, has left an infinite number of findings involving the people back in time making the island to be discovered.
Sicily is also an excellent place to relax thanks to sun, sea and the excellent weather each year are for a long time.
Fondachello owes its origins to a small "warehouse" that served as a staging point for travelers along the coast. A meeting point of ancient origins, because, since the period between the second and first millennium BC, there are examples of how the "Mascali marine" were the scenario of trade among the indigenous inhabitants of the surrounding mountains and merchants (Phoenicians, Greeks and Carthaginians), who landed on the Ionian coast-Etna to make trade and supplies of pitch, which the local people derived from the forests of Mount Etna.
The territory in question, however, despite the favorable position, has never been the subject of a major urban development, being for many centuries, an area almost devoid of population.
The main reason is to be found in the environment of the place, ill-suited to support human settlements. The area, in fact, was characterized by the presence of the "Mascali Lake": a large marshy area, which no longer exists (it survives only part of which the portion falling in the area of natural Fiumefreddo is subject to constraint), which stretching from Marina di Cottone at St. Anna, whose waters were particularly malaria and stagnant smelly because of a volcanic cone (died 1847), in the section of "Gurna", erupting magma sulphurous waters.
One factor that had a negative effect on the choice of the people who wished to settle in the "County", who preferred to settle in the most healthy and defensible as, for example, those hills Mascali and Nunziata or the village of Fiumefreddo.
It is therefore evident the importance of the work of land reclamation, built between the late 800 and early 900 by the owners of the place, the principles of Gravina Palagonia.
An intervention that allowed the migration of population from rural village to the marina Fondachello (the old town can be identified along the road about 100 meters north from the church), helping to achieve a transformation not only environmental but also human and economic , changing a community of peasants in a fishing village.
Given this premise, it is therefore understandable why, until the mid-nineteenth century, Fondachello was located in the countryside, in a more internal than the current coastal town (1 km north-west).
It was a small rural village, consisting of scattered houses.
The country, in recent years, thanks to its convenient location (near the sea, close to the Park of Etna, and just 30 km from Catania and 15 km from Taormina) is the focus of a considerable expansion of tourism, which has meant that the center of Sicily, with its disposal beaches and facilities,it's becaming a reference point for summer tourism in the Ionian sea.
