We are in the Ariège. The Hamlet is about 60 kms South of Toulouse (one and a half hours). Two and a half hours from Andorra and one and a half hours to Spain ( 4 kms from the house as the crow flies) but longer by road. We are at 780 metres altitude. Rural setting surrounding by mountains and fields. The Lac de Bethmale is 5 kms (an hour's walk).which is in a beautiful setting with barbeque facilities and fishing. Paths into the mountains ( maps supplied) for the walkers. Nearest village with shopping facilities, chemist, doctor, dentist and supermarket is 5 kms.
La Transhumance is a must to see. The shepherds and farmers take up part of their herds and flocks to the green pastures at higher altitude. A buffet lunch for everyone is served (bookings necessary) upon arrival at la Cirque du Campulys (1500 mtres) before the animals finally reach their new summer pastures the next day. Bookings for lunch can be taken at the Tourist Office at Castillon. The cows, sheep and a herd of horses are left to graze at the same place and time as everyone else. La Cirque du Campulys is a natural beauty spot in the mountains above Le Lac de Bethmale.
The largest town is Saint Girons which is 40 kms. Historical town of Foix with it's castle is 50 mins by car. The area is part of France's natural parks and is particularly beautiful and unspoilt. There is no large industry and tourism is of all importance. Farming plays a large part around this particular part of the Ariege. Tradition is still strong. Local costumes and folklore dances and songs are kept alive by the group called La Bethmalaise. They can be seen at various concerts and feast days particularly in the summer months.
