No cars, no noise, just the rustle of a breeze through the pine trees, the song of a chickadee and the occasional call of a loon. You work hard. You deserve a break! This is Jennie Cottage, overlooking lovely Plunkett Pond in Northern Maine, the most forested state in the country. Located just one hour north of Bangor, the cottage is an easy 10 minute drive from I-95. It is close to Baxter State Park and beautiful Mt. Katahdin (the start or end point of the Appalachian Trail). Canada is about 1 hour away and Acadia National Park is a 2.5 hour trip. With virtually no traffic, on a dirt road, the property is very child friendly (although supervision is a must near the lake, of course). Perfect for couples, also and well-behaved dogs are welcome, too!

Inside, you'll find a knotty pine interior which features a cozy living room with a large TV (satellite service) and a DVD player (bring your own DVD's). The living room has a wood burning stove and a Monitor heater. There is a spacious dining area, kitchen, two bedrooms and a bathroom. The kitchen has everything you might need, including a refrigerator/freezer, electric range, microwave, coffee maker, toaster and even a bread machine. The water is well water, from an underground spring and we do have hot water! A limited number of towels are available but you might want to bring some of your own, as well as beach towels.

The cottage sleeps five–one bedroom has a full-sized bed with an ultra-comfy memory foam mattress and the other bedroom has two twin beds, both with memory foam mattresses. There is also a twin Aerobed that you can put on the floor for a fifth person. The beds are dressed with high-quality fleece or flannel sheets and fluffy, goose down comforters are available for each. In the summer months, the bunkhouse is available and sleeps 2, so the maximum guest capacity is 7 (5 in the cottage, 2 in the bunkhouse). The bunkhouse has no electricity and no heat and even in the summertime, nights in Maine can be fairly chilly but it could be the perfect spot for adventurous kids with flashlights!

There is no landline phone and cell service depends on your carrier. There is, however, wireless Internet access via satellite.

Outside, you'll experience the wild beauty of Plunkett Pond, which is a mere 50 feet from the back door. You can practically roll out of bed and into the lake! In the summertime, a 2-person, sturdy, inflatable boat is available, as well as a single-seat kayak, so you can cruise the 435 acres of sparkling clean water, observing a wide variety of wildlife, including red squirrels, chipmunks, woodpeckers, muskrats, raccoons, moose, deer, eagles and of course, Maine's famous loons. If you prefer to relax, you can lounge by the water's edge until you drift off into a peaceful nap in your lakeside hammock. In the evening, you can build a crackling fire in the outdoor fireplace while listening to the loons and crickets. Roast some weenies or make s'mores! You can fish in the lake, if you like (you'll need a fishing license), so bring your gear! There is a charcoal grill available, so you can cook your freshly caught fish on the grill.

Please keep in mind that some weeks shown as unavailable on the calendar may still be available, so please ask if you have a specific week or weeks in mind.

We would love for you to be our guests at Jennie Cottage. We like to think that our lakeside retreat captures the essence of the Maine state slogan, “Maine: Life as it should be.” Your memories of your vacation here will last a lifetime.

The Maine region

Jennie Cottage is located about 45 minutes from Baxter State Park which is great for mountain climbing, hiking, picnicking and moose watching! Its most famous mountain, beautiful Mt. Katahdin, is also the end--or the beginning--of the famous Appalachian Trail. Canada is about 1 hour to the east and Acadia National Park is about 2.5 hours away, to the southeast. There is a really fun restaurant/bar nearby, called The Bear Den, where they have live music and karaoke. You can't miss it--there's a giant, stuffed bear on the roof! There is grocery shopping about 30 minutes away and a golf course in Island Falls, also about 30 minutes away. There is an Amish settlement (one of only three in New England) 45 minutes away in Smyrna, that sells everything from homemade pastries, butter and cheeses to work boots and saw blades! Maine is famous for blueberries and there are farms where you can take your basket and pick your own. We are about 1 hour north of Bangor International Airport and 30 minutes away from Millinocket (to the southwest).
