Carcassonne is the cultural and historic capital of the Aude region sitting upon the Aude river and crossed by the breathtakingly beautiful Canal Du Midi.Just a ten-minute walk from the house is a shopping complex - including the Geant Supermarket, Leader Price and lidl among others. Ideal for your weekly shop or even closer to the apartments are local amenities, including an excellent boulangerie selling fabulous bread, croissants and patisseries, a fishmonger, wine cave, small supermarket and a good pizza restaurant. The new town is a compact multi-ethnic place, built on a grid system, which makes sightseeing easy. At the hub of this grid is the elegant Place Carnot with its many bars and cafes -ideal to people watch! There is a typical French market every Saturday morning. Well worth a visit just for the atmosphere alone! There's also a daily fruit and veg market in the Place de Carnot - closed Sunday. The number of places to visit in a week is almost unlimited and there is plenty to occupy you in Carcassonne alone! For the more adventurous, some of our favourites so far are :-The villages of Trebes set on the Canal Du Midi, the beautiful Lagrasse with its famous bridge and abbey, Ribault with its amazing water falls --just brilliant for swimming and sun bathing in the summer months. The mysterious villages of Minerve and Rennes Le Chateau. The small towns of Limoux a thirty-minute drive through acres of vineyards - famous for its Blanquette, a wonderful sparkling wine, Languedoc's local champagne. Quillan for white water rafting among many adventure sports. Mirepoix- with its medieval timbered houses abutting the square - which is lively, and bustling place on market day. The historic town of Foix and the two jewels of the regions Mediterranean, Collioure and Gruissan.
