The Chania Prefecture region

We would consider Chania a must visit with its Venetian Port lined with its many tavernas which can be enjoyed during the daytime or evening. This ancient bustling town with charming back alleys has many attractions including museums, an indoor market, cobbled streets and is richly steeped in history.
The ancient city of Aptera (closed on Mondays ) is located just south of Kalami on the Chania on an elevation with spectacular views of Souda Bay. The site is still being excavated but there is still plenty to see, with the ruins of the city of Aptera and Turkish fortress.
Kourans and Lake Kournas. Lake kournas is the only natural freshwater lake on Crete. It covers a total of area of some 15 acres and has a depth of 25 metres. The village of Kournas is beautifully set above the lake on a mountain in the shape of a horseshoe. It has 3 historic churches and is well know for its pottery.
Elafonissi Beach - on the far west corner of Crete, this is known as the Caribbean of Crete and has pinkish sand and an island you can wade out to.
Knossos Palace and Heraklion Archaeological Museum - 4000 year old relics of a Minoan civilization redeemed almost to its former glory and Museum witch holds the majority of the ancient artifacts found over the year on Crete and all the original pieces from Knossos.
Samaria Gorge - Europe's longest gorge at 11 miles/16km long. Excellent for those of you who enjoy walking.
Gramvousa Island and Balos Lagoon - Crystal clear jade waters and pale white sands.

Litsarda is a quaint, traditional and friendly village. It is one of the many Apokoron villages in this part of Crete. All have their own charm and are certainly worth exploring. Vamos is the one of the oldest villages in Crete, only a 3 min drive away, it's a delightful mix of renovated buildings, charming old cobbled streets and beautiful views. Here you will find a good selection of amenities with good tavernas, supermarket, bakers, English butchers, English speaking Health Centre, cake shop, chemist, post office, bank with ATM, petrol stations, internet cafe, general store, etc.
The nearest beach resorts are Almerida, Kalives and Georgioupoli all of which are easily reached by car all have great sandy beaches.
Almerida - (15 mins drive) lovely sandy crescent shaped beach with tavernas and cafes around the edge. A very safe beach, it is initially very shallow, excellent for children. There are sun-beds umbrellas and water sports available. Also available for hire are: windsurfers, canoes and catamarns.
Georgiopolis - (20 mins drive) is a busier resort with a long expanse of golden sandy beach with sun-beds and umbrellas, it also boasts a large public outdoor swimming pool. Horse riding is also available. To the west is Lake Kournas, Cretes' only fresh water lake where you can take a swim or hire a pedalo to see terrapins and birdlife.
Kalives - a working village open all year round with lots of shops, bars and tavernas.( 15 mins drive) It lies on the coast at the entrance of Souda Bay. Again there is a lovely sandy beach with sun-beds, umbrellas, seaside tavernas and bars. The delightful church is well worth a visit.
Kokkino Horio - Traditional village that means 'red village'. Byzantine church with cavernous passage leading to opposite hill and glass blowing factory with gift shop.
Plaka - (20 mins drive) Traditional village that together with kokkino Horio was the village setting for the famous film "Zorba the Greek" Just outside here you will find tiny hidden beaches of Koutalas - lovely with its sea caves.
