The Poitou-Charentes region

This part of the Poitou-Charentes boasts the second most sun hours in the whole of France. From Sanxay it is easy to explore the prehistoric burial chambers at Bougon, the beautiful Marais Poitevan (Green Venice) and the historic cities and towns of Poitiers, Niort and Parthenay. The famous multimedia centre at Futuroscope is 45 minutes away and exciting pageants are staged at the Puis de Fou. The historic port of La Rochelle and the beaches and towns of the Isle de R are just over an hour away. A leisurly day trip can take you to the chteaux and vineyards of the Loire or south to Cognac and Bordeaux.

The picturesque village of Sanxay is situated within a loop of the river Vonne with houses dating from the 15th century. There are good local amenities including village shops, a bakery and bar. There is a tourist information office, campsite, children's’ play area and a 50 metre open air swimming pool with accompanying children's’ pool. The village is a good centre for fishing and cycling. The moated Château de Marconnay is a venue for a memorable meal and the interesting Gallo-Roman site, which is open year-round, also stages an internationally acclaimed opera in the amphitheatre each August. In the last week of October the famous International Bird Fair is held at Mènigoute.
