The Eastern Algarve is a relatively unspoilt area, retaining much of it's character. Olhao with its cube houses, cobbled streets and historic fishing industry offers a real taste of this part of Portugal.
Closeness to the unspoilt sandbank islands (just a short ferry trip away), an interesting old town and port area, and a lively local farmers market are great attractions. In addition, there is a splendid seafront promenade, great restaurants, evening jazz cocktails and a wonderful ice cream shop to boot! The Old Merchants House is in one of the best locations in the old quarter of Olhao and has great 360 degree views.
No need for a car here. If you want to travel further afield, there is a single line railway that travels along the coast, a local bus station which will take you to Faro , Tavira and local villages , or even an express service for a long day in Seville.
If you do hire a car, however, there is plenty of free on-street parking close-by.
