The island of Corfu is located just off the West coast of Greece and is considered as one of Greece's most beautiful islands. The lush vegetation which is dominated by over 3 million olive trees, some of them over 400 years old, comes as an unexpected surprise for first time visitors. It's surrounded by a beautiful and varied coastline with the precise balance of long sandy beaches, pebble beaches, secluded shingle coves, some of which can only be reached by boat, and high cliffs which are the perfect resting point to take in some of the spectacular sunsets. An interesting architecture and historical palaces complete the picture. Corfu was not given the name of the Emerald Island for no reason.
Kerkira, the capital city of the island is one of the most beautiful cities of the Mediterranean with a strong Venetian element, but also with many English and French influences. In 2007 Corfu's old town was inscribed in UNESCO's World Heritage List. Other interesting sights are amongst others:
• The Achilleion in the old village of Gastouri, palace of the Austrian princess Sissy.
• Pontikonissi (The Mouse Island
• The Monastery of Panagia and the Byzantine fortress Angelokastro inKrini (near Paleokastritsa).
• Canal d' Amour in Sidari.
• Logas in Peroulades with its breathtaking view.
Corfu offers a wide variety of entertainment choices, from frequented big clubs and bars to quiet seaside cafes and ouzo tavernas. Also worth the visit are the public or religious celebrations in numerous villages throughout the summer.
The cuisine is influenced by various cultures that occupied the island during the last centuries. Some of the traditional specialties are Pastitsada (Stew veal or rooster with thick pasta in red sauce), Sofrito (Julien of tenderloin in wine-garlic sauce) and Bourdeto (Scorpion Fish in red pepper sauce), etc. A very famous sweet is the small orange fruit of the Koum Kouat tree, which is prepared and served in many different ways.
Corfu offers something for everyone during all seasons. In the spring the freshness of the abundant spring flowers and Mediterranean sunshine are perfect for a walking or a cycling holiday, but also to unwind, relax and recharge. During the summer months you can enjoy swimming in the clearest of water or hire a boat to explore the coast line. Moor at one of the sea side tavern's and enjoy a wonderful lunch or find a hidden beach to sunbathe. In the later season Corfu is quieter, the sea is nice and warm and it is the perfect time of year to relax and get ready for the winter ahead.
Kato Korakiana is set on the North-east side of the island, about 15 kilometres from Corfu town and the airport, at the foot of Mount Pantokrator. Along the coast you find beautiful pebble beaches in Dassia, Barbati and Ipsos, resorts which offer a great variety of water sports and other facilities. The views are fantastic too. You can see most of Corfu's eastern side, with vistas over cushiony-green hills carpeted with olive groves and fruit orchards. Even the Albanian mountains, which are sometimes snow-dusted, are visible in the distance.
When you're not relaxing on the beautiful beach, head up into the village itself. Enjoy a refreshing cold frappè with the locals in one of the family-run cafes or try the local delicious cuisine. The village offers wonderful country walks, great history, a wide variety of food and drink, friendly locals and wonderful scenery. Korakiana is the kind of place that once you've discovered it, it'll be difficult to holiday anywhere else again.
