Within an hour or so of Chamonix you can find a huge range of places to visit: Geneva for culture and upmarket shopping, Annecy for beautiful lakeside, Martigny for world-class art galleries, Montreux for jazz fans, Courmayeur for pizza (!) and so on. The Chamonix valley is very well connected by road, and is a wonderful base for touring. The Italian lakes a 2-3 hours away, Milan 2 hours or so, and even Venice is only 5 hours.Nearer home, the scenery in the Valley is the most spectacular in the Alps, and for the more active there's a huge range of things to do - all forms of climbing, paragliding, walking, canyoning, white water rafting, mountain biking, swimming, riding, husky sledding, snow-shoeing, tree adventure, wildlife, music, comedy clubs, art galleries, shopping and lots of good bars and restaurants.
The Chamonix valley is one of the most spectacular areas of the Alps, and is hugely popular summer and winter. The skiing is world-class, but need not be daunting: Les Houches has a a family-friendly ski area with a lift 150m from the apartment. Local bus services are very good between ski areas. Is is also very easy to make day trips to a wide range of other resorts in France, Italy and Switzerland. In summer (and for non-skiers in winter) there are a wealth of actiivities from the most extreme (ice climbing) to the most gentle (world class art galleries). Walking is very popular, and the main ski lifts are open in summer to take the slog out of getting up to the best scenery! Lots of wildlife if you look carefully (including a marmot who likes cheese sandwiches). In hot weather the Lacs du Passy beach has shade trees, and you can lie on an airbed in the lake and gaze up at the glaciers of Mont Blanc.Les Houches is quiet and family friendly, with a good range of bars and restaurants. Chamonix is a lot larger, and has a huge range of facilities. There is a kids activity park in Chamonix; our son used to have to be surgically extracted from the summer luge! There are at least three large "tree adventure" parks and a wildlife park with wonderful views of Mont Blanc.
