The Rhône-Alpes region

The French Alps is a very popular tourist region and is Europe’s largest mountain range. The Haute Savoie region gives its name to the Savoyard people and also the regional style of cooking, which includes Tartiflette, Fondue and Raclette – melted cheese with potatoes and cold meats – welcome fuel after a long days walking or skiing!

Thollon is is the perfect base to explore the region being only 20 mins from the Swiss border at St Gingolph...in the direction of Montreux. Thollon is on the edge of the Portes du Soleil* where you have one of the largest winter sport areas in the world. The region covers 14 valleys stretched out over France (Haute-Savoie) and Switzerland (The Valais). There are 650 kilometres of slopes, 200+ ski-lifts, 243 km of cross-country skiing and 9 snowparks.

In the summer there are lots of different outdoor activities, vineyards, shops and places of interest all around the Lake. If the weather breaks there is always the Swiss Water Park at Le Bouveret...35 mins. The Gruyere Cheese village, The Salt mines and Panoramic mountain train from Montreux to Gstaad...are not to be missed. Remember to take your passports!

Thollon-les-Mémises is a traditional and friendly Savoyard village between 1000-2000m overlooking Lake Geneva...it is known as 'The Balcony of Lac Leman'. The views from Thollon-les-Mémises are so glorious that they are actually mentioned in the Michelin Guide, which is quite an accolade for such a small village!

At nearby Bernex (15 mins) there is The Dent Doche mountain to climb and The Blues Rock Cafe for bowling, pool tables and excellent live bands on Thursday evenings.

Evian Les Bains...the home of 'Evian' mineral water....is a 15 minute drive down the mountain where there is sailing, golf, swimming and scuba diving in the Lake plus a weekly market. Wherever you look there are water fountains and beautiful flowers...even the roundabouts are like formal gardens.

At the Lido there is a 50 metre pool...just one of three pools surrounded by immaculate lawns and gardens...including a fenced grassed area with toddlers pool. There is also a restaurant, showers, water skiing, table tennis, volley ball, water shute and swimming and diving boards into the Lake. Pedalos and crazy golf are adjacent. In Evian there are plenty of excellent restaurants, bars, shops, hairdressers, supermarkets and a Casino. The Marina has an area for live music and entertainment where fountains dance to the beat of the music. Paddle steamers cross the lake to the Swiss towns of Lausanne, Vevey...for the local wine tasting market - not to be missed, Montreux (for the famous Chateau Chillon and the Jazz Festival in July), and also the French medieval village of Yvoire, plus many more interesting places.

Closeby....is Thonon, a large town with a superb weekly market, Marina...with live bands on the Quay, Lido, White water rafting and Scuba diving is nearby. Yvoire...charming Medieval village on Lake with excellent places to eat, fabulous array of flowers and interesting jewellery and craft shops. Hotel Royal Evian and Spa...excellent 18 hole golf course and venue for the Evian Masters...women's professional golf tournament held in July...open to non-residents.

Across the Lake at Lausanne....visit The Olympic Museum, admire the stunning architecture, relax in the excellent bars and cafés, great for shopping, walking along the flower-decked promenade and enjoying breathtaking views from the Quayside of Lake Geneva and mountains.
