Very historic area especially Alghero which was a fortified town. Being strategically placed in the Mediterranean it was a target for the surrounding countries and has been occupied by Spain and there still exists a Spanish influence in the town. The centre of Sardinia is quite mountainous and there are some very pleasant drives with stunning views. The climate is typical Mediterranean, quite warm but the sea influence tempers it and is very pleasant right through to end of October from about April.
The bastions around the old town of Alghero make for a very pleasant and interesting walk. You can browse in the good variety of craft and other shops and stop off for an excellent Espresso or some fabulous ice-cream! There are very many tourist attractions throughout the surrounding area including the magnificent caves "Grotto di Nettuno" which are located at the Capo Caccia and can be reached by boat, also you can drive there but there is a large descent ! You can also visit some of the winerys and sample some of their excellent produce! There are many towns worth a visit, the drive to Bosa to the south of Alghero is breathtaking. If you do not have a car, there are plenty of bus tours in the high season.
