Location description from manager

The Famagusta District

Cyprus boasts of blue sky and sunshine 360 days of the year. The summer months experience temperatures going up into the 90's during July and August and the Winter months are mild.

The crystal clear sea and the golden sandy beaches of the Famagusta area gently embrace the eastern corner of the island with more traditional towns and villages such as Paralimni and Deryneia and then popular resorts such as Protaras a veritable paradise for anyone who loves the sea and water sports or simply relaxing on the beach. Within 15 minutes driving distance from Deryneia you can visit Protaras or the beautiful harbour of Ayia Napa and the medieval monastery in the middle of the town.

Also to be seen are the windmills and small churches of the surrounding villages including the beautiful church of Profitis Elias at the top of a rocky hill, and not to be missed the picturesque fishing refuge at Potamos Liopetriou with its varied selection of coffee shops and fish tavernas.

Resorts in Famagusta out of the tourist season are quieter during the months November to Easter, (the main tourist season normally being from Easter to November). Out of season, Deryneia and Paralimni do not close so these locations make it ideal to visit all year round.

Deryneia

So whats in Deryneia?

Deryneia has a theme Park which is located in Iroon Street, and includes a Children's Corner,a room with bird's exhibition, an amphitheater, and a War Memorial for the Heroic Murdered and Missing of 1974.
The park is right next to B' Elementary School in a stretch of land of about 1000 m², and was completed in May 2002. It hosts displays of traditional water pumping devices, such as a windmill, 'alakati', lever, and a traditional tab.

The amphitheatre is also in the same stretch of land, an ornament for the Town. It has an 800 seats capacity and in summer it houses all open air cultural activities.

War Memorials War Memorial for the Heroic Murdered and Missing of 1974

The magnificent and imposing memorial of the Fallen, Murdered and Missing of the Turkish invasion in 1974, is located in the corner of Iroon and Pafou streets, next to the thematic park and amphitheatre of the town and faces the occupied city of Famagusta. You can now visit Famagusta via the border or visit the view point and speak to the owner who lived and worked in Famagusta at the time of the invasion in 1974.

A beautiful park and a magnificent memorial to honour the young heroes who scarified their lives in the love for Cyprus and in the name of freedom. Freedom that was only given incomplete as the Ghost Town of Famagusta is still an unsolved political problem.

The Folk Art Museum in Deryneia is housed in an old traditional house donated by Mr. Varnavas and Mrs. Margarita Hadjiliasi in memory of their three children who died at an early age. The building was declared a scheduled building and was renovated by the Municipality under the supervision of the Town Planning and Housing Department.

The indoor and outdoor areas of the Folk Art Museum, as well as, the exhibition of the different household items and farming tools were arranged in collaboration with the Cyprus Handicraft Service and illustrate a typical Cypriot traditional house and functions.

Apart from the household equipment of a traditional Cypriot house, the Folk Art Museum also exhibits farming tools that were traditionally used by a rural family in the region.
All items have been kindly donated by the people of Deryneia and other neighboring areas.
In the foreyard of the Museum, there is an oven, which Mrs Margarita Hadjiliassis often uses to bake bread and rolls.

As well as boasting 3 Byzantine churches that date as far back as the 15th century, Deryneia also has a Folk Art Museum that is a very popular venue for weddings as well.

The locals of the village are very proud people and are constantly trying to improve the area, the latest cultural additions to the village include a new Cultural Centre overlooking Famagusta and an Open-Air Amphitheatre. Whilst the Cultural Centre provides great insight into the area's history, the Amphitheatre hosts plays, dances and celebrations that attract locals and tourists alike.

Once a year there is also a festival in honour of 'Saint Modestos' that is held in the streets near the centre of Deryneia. The festival lasts for two nights and is held in mid-December.

There are many traditional Cypriot tavernas in the village that serve home cooked Cypriot dishes that will leave you asking for more and what is even better is the price, a Cypriot Meze for example is fantastic value. Lavezin Tavern is an authentic taverna described by any people as one of the best restaurants in the Paralimni area. The owner even catches fish this is served - check out further information on Trip Adviser.

Besides traditional Cypriot food, there are tavernas and cafes that serve international cuisine such as steak, pizza or just plain burger with chips.

Unlike the resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras that close between November and April, Deryneia is open all year round, so you will always have somewhere to go for a drink or a meal.

You will also find excellent shopping facilities including large supermarkets and pharmacies, lady's, men's & children's fashion stores, sports shops, and jewellery stores.

There is also a gym in Deryneia that includes an indoor swimming pool and sauna but if you are more of an outdoors type of person, Cape Greco National Park is a mere 10minutes drive away and offers some of most beautiful nature trails anywhere on the island.

Deryneia is next to the large town of Paralimni and only a five-minute drive away from the beach, whilst the motorway leading to all the other cities is literally around the corner.

The popular resorts of Protaras and Ayia Napa are both about a 10minute drive away as is Cape Greco National Park.

Relax… It's Deryneia!
It's hard to sum up all of the qualities that Deryneia has to offer.
After all, where do you start?
Do you start with the wonderful people that will welcome you into their communtity?
Do you start with the history and culture that surrounds and accompanies you around every corner?
Or, do you start with all the modern shops and amenities that are at your convenience?
There is only one place to start and that is here in Deryneia, because, unless you can see, hear, smell and touch this beautiful place, it's hard to really sum it all up using only words.
