The Valencian Country region
The Valencian Community is the constitution of the Valencian Country as an autonomous community of Spain. It is the fourth most populated after Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid with more than 5.1 million inhabitants. It is often homonymously identified with its capital València, which is the third largest city of Spain. It is located along the Mediterranean coast in the south-east of the Iberian peninsula. It borders with Catalonia to the north, Aragon and Castile–La Mancha to the west, and Murcia to the south. It is formed by the provinces of Castelló, València and Alacant.
Dénia is a city in the province of Alicante, Spain, on the Costa Blanca halfway between Alicante and Valencia, the judicial seat of the comarca of Marina Alta. As of 2012, it had a population of 44,455.
Dénia is home to a castle on a rocky crag overlooking the city. It was built in the 11th and 12th century and offers views around the sea, the city and the surrounding area. in the castle is the Palau del Governador its museum.
Dénia also has the Museu Etnològic with further details on the history and culture of the city.
The Montgó Nature Reserve encompases 2150 hectares (5312 acres) around the mountain. It includes a coastal section that covers over 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). The Reserve contains important archaeological finds such as cave paintings, Phoenician amphoras and the remains of Iberian settlements. Because of its extraordinary wealth of flora, fauna and ecosystems the park was declared an officially protected nature reserve in 1987. The reserve runs almost parallel to the coastline, joining the coastal area via a flat area known as 'les Planes' which ends at Cap de San Anton
The ferry to Ibiza and the other Balearic Islands departs daily. The city also serves as the northern terminus for a picturesque 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) metre gauge railway line through the mountains from Alicante, popularly known as the Limón Express.
The bonfire festival is celebrated each March. Huge papier maché statues, called fallas are set up throughout the town, and then set ablaze.
The Bous a la Mar (meaning "Bulls at the Sea") is held in July. The highlight of this week long festival is watching bulls run down the main street Marqués de Campo, only to be chased into the Mediterranean sea by those daring enough to enter a makeshift bull ring with them.
