Description

Beautiful Georgian house, 25 seconds walk from the sea, in the centre of conservation area in the old town of Deal, preserved in keeping with its age. Please don't expect new. All its original panelling, oil paintings, 2 bathrooms.

Please do not chose this house if you are likely to be upset by imperfections of age. This house has dust, cobwebs, and the odd old stains and marks. if you prefer a spotless environment please chose another house.

A 2 bedroom, 2 reception room, 2 bathroom and toilets, Georgian house on four floors, including a painter's studio and writer's study, all for £79 per night! A step back in time.

This extremely photogenic house can also be hired for photoshoots/filming at very cheap rates.

Available for hire for readings, clubs, events, exhibitions, performances. It's aged, Georgian interior offers a unique and rare atmosphere and is suitable for many uses. No matter how unusual your idea is, we will try to accomodate you.

One of the very last houses in Deal's famous Middle Street not to have been modernised, done up, renovated, "restored" or otherwise ruined in the past decade's regrettable of spate of "gloss white gentrification" in which most of the renowned street's 18th century houses have been stripped, gutted, straightened out and painted white inside and out. The survivors are very few, this is said by many to be almost the only one.

This house, like the street, has had a colourful career, including starting off as a boat builder's house, then a smugglers house (complete with concealed door inside a cupboard leading to the neighbouring house, which you can see through a tiny hole in a boarded up concealed false door), was possibly visited by Nelson himself (his wounded officers and seamen were billeted all along Middle Street after the Battle of Boulogne), it has reputedly served as a brothel, a drug den, and a family home, in turns, has housed German's, Swedes, Americans, nurses in pairs, writers, musicians, social workers, carers, weight lifters, dentists, actors and a family of 14 Hasidic Jews, a Lord, a Lady, museum curators, a journalist from the Independent (who apparently hated it), and an internationally notorious playwright. It was very briefly an art gallery, puppet theatre and cafe; has had ambassadors and criminals to dinner in the basement, and comes with a small original pen drawing of itself by one of Britain's few female holders of the Military Cross, who lived across the road, drove a motorbike into her 80s, and used to come to the still-remembered dinner parties with the two elderly nurses who lived here as a couple from the 1950s (their kitchen is still there) before the present owners, a family with 4 children, bought it by paying a ransom to a developer, lived there with their children, then rented it out for some years. This house is presently owned by a playwright who is listed on Wikipedia as one of the two famous living people in Deal.

If you don't like elderly things, or dust or age or colour or creaks or the wind that whistles through the keyholes then there are many houses on this street where those aspects have been removed. If you do want one of the few houses to have retained age, not just "features", then this might suit you. This house is unique, and this is a rare opportunity to stay in one of the very few remaining of its kind anywhere. There's one thing that can't be replaced once it's all gone, and that is age. Time is literally running out.

Bring slippers and a warm jumper in winter, it can be draughty. Please note that this house is old and has been kept old and cannot be made squeaky clean like new OR RENOVATED houses can. We don't use air fresheners or perfumed cleaning products. If you think this may not suit you, please chose another house.

Please note : There is a hot shower in the bathroom. But in the rest of the house cold water only in all the taps.

The kitchen is very basic. A small electric cooker with an oven and two rings. A fridge. A sink. Table and chairs. A kettle. A toaster. No big work tops. Tea, coffee, milk, biscuits,chocolate and breakfast cereal always supplied.The kitchen was modernised in the fifties by previous owners. We enjoyed living in the house with our four children but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

There are plenty of car parks very near by. 10 to 15 minutes away from the house, any direction away from the town centre, there is also free parking on the road. No 2 Middle Street is at the South end of the street, right by South Street. If you stand on the pier facing the town the house is 2 minutes walk away, slightly to the left.

Whenever possible we are flexible about arrival and departure times.

If there is anything you want or need, anything from a bigger saucepan to anything at all, you are more than welcome to ask and we will bring it to you if possible.

There is no television. Will guests please note that there is no television licence to this property.
