Location description from owner

The Aquitaine region

With a population of about 900 people, Laluque is a typical Landais village full of French character and charm. The village has a stunning church, local shop, children's play area, pub and hair dresser's. The nearest supermarket is about 10 minutes away, in Pontonx. The extensive pine forests all around the village offer secluded cycling opportunities.

Nearby Dax is a bustling spa town on the River Adour. It has Roman remains, a wonderful cathedral, a market, supermarket, and arena where the very popular course Landaise is held every year. This is an ancient form of bullfighting, which involves no bloodshed. Instead, the athletic 'bullfighters' dodge and leap over the cows, sometimes suffering grazes and bruises, whilst the cows return to their luxurious grasslands unscathed.
The adjacent St-Paul-les-Dax further offers walks around the lovely Lac de Christus, shopping at the large new shopping mall with supermarket, or indoor swimming at the lakeside pool.

For a beach trip, you are spoilt for choice. Moliets Plage is our family favourite, but other great Atlantic beaches include Hossegor, Contis, Messanges and Mimizan. All include plenty of sand for the little ones (we provide the buckets and spades!). For older children and adults take the boogie boards for having fun in the waves.
The beaches are also a beautiful destination during the winter months the water may be a little cold but the views and walks are amazing.
The local lakes (etangs), such as Leon (30 min) and Soustons (40 min), are also great destinations for swimming, boating, wind surfing, walking and cycling.

From watching the old French gentlemen play ptanque to witnessing the fastest ball game in the world (Pelote Basque), South West France has much to offer the sporting enthusiast. Other possible sporting outings include rugby (Biarritz Olympique or Dax), horse racing (Dax) and golf (stunning courses at Moliets, Seignosse, Biarritz),
In fact, South West France is arguably one of the very best areas for golf in Europe. Whether you are a group of scratch golfers looking to play at some of France's best courses, or a keen beginner looking for your first taste of European golf, then Libellule offers the perfect base.

Dax

Less than an hour away is the very chique and cosmopolitan town of Biarritz, a fascinating contrast to the rustic French village of Laluque. Enjoy fine food in one of the Michelin-starred restaurants, stroll along La Grande Plage, walk to the lighthouse or enjoy an evening in the casino.

To the north, Bordeaux with its famous vineyards is just over an hour away, as are the vine-covered slopes to the south east around Pau, whilst the Tursan vineyards are less than an hour's drive. Also to the south east, the beautiful rolling hills of the Chalosse lead to the even more spectacular surroundings of the Pyrenees, reached within an hour. Whether in summer or winter, you can see some of the most amazing views in the world, with ski resorts, such as Gourette within 2-3 hours.
Further west, where the Pyrenees slope down towards the Atlantic Ocean, a popular peak, named La Rhune, can be accessed by a little railway, always a treat for children and adults alike.

The Great Dune de Pyla (or Pilat) is the second largest sand dune in Europe. It is located in the Arcachon Bay area to the west of Bordeaux. The dune measures 500m wide by 3km long and reaches a height of 107m above sea level. This is an excellent destination for a family day out, less than an hour and a half from Laluque (or ideal to combine with flights in or out of Bordeaux airport).

Another entertaining day out is to explore the Basque area south towards Spain. Visit St Jean de Luz, a beautiful seaside resort and active fishing port not far from the Spanish border. Its town centre has a medieval background; the principle architecture here is typically Basque, but with a blend of Moorish and Spanish Andalusian influence too. About an hour away, St Jean de Luz also offers a fantastic beach and impressive golf course. Or venture a little further and walk or drive along the beautiful 'Corniche', a spectacular stretch of Atlantic coastline, before catching the 10 min ferry from Hendaye to Hondarribia in Spain, where you can enjoy a typically Spanish meal at one of the many traditional restaurants.
