Description

Spyglass is now refurbished and enlarged and is transformed into a lovely cosy 2 bedroom cottage retaining all it's original charm but with a new twist upstairs........the ground-floor kitchen/dining is now a second bedroom. The lounge upstairs has had the roof raised and is a great all-in-one lounge/ kitchen /dining room from which there are full width, glass windows with truly stunning views overlooking the River Dart, with increased views up river, across to Kingswear, and down the estuary past Dartmouth Castle and out to sea. There is also a small door giving direct access to the roof terrace with more fine river and sea views. A high efficiency wood burning stove is installed upstairs and makes the whole room warm and cosy. There are 4 Velux roof windows giving more views and lots of light upstairs. We ran out for time for full finishing off but now love the upstairs in natural plaster colour we are keeping it that way! Insulation has been brought up to modern standards to keep

The Address is 6 Nelson Steps, Dartmouth TQ69BS. It is up some steps but it does make it a gloriously quiet location with great views. All the photographs are taken from the property, not the surrounding area. There is a nice light shower room and 2 bedrooms on the ground floor. The Captain's bedroom has a double bed and the Crew's bedroom has 2 three foot single beds. The lounge has flat screen LCD tv/dvd/radio . The whole place is nautically themed with fishing nets and glass floats, anchors, a large brass ships' bell, paintings, prints, old navigation lights, blocks and tackles, etc...just lovely! The property has it's own wifi. The outside terrace has lighting and a table and 4 chairs. We ask guests to bring their own linen and towels. Duvets and pillows are provided. Parking is on the road during the off season and during the summer season there is on street parking for up to 2 hours and overnight plus a parking permit is provided with the cottage giving free unlimited parking in the town centre car park and the park and ride (and some other car parks within the area). There are wonderful walks along the coast East and West and Spyglass is directly on the Coastal Path. The town centre with its many and varied shops and restaurants is just 2 minutes walk. River and fishing trips run regularly from the quay side. The cottage is on the Western lower slopes of the Dart and looks down on the Lower Ferry. You can sit on the sofa in the sitting room and watch the fishing boats and yachts coming in, and, in the evening you can sit and see the lights illuminating Dartmouth Castle and track the lights of boats as they enter the Dart. We can only usually do short breaks out of season. Spyglass is a beautiful place in a great location. As there are steps to the property I could not recommend it for the infirm. That said - we have had many older visitors including my own 90 year old mother.....

Location description from owner

The England region

Dartmouth is famous for its beautiful scenery, the wonderful Dart estuary, walking, fishing, crabbing, the Royal Naval College and many more unique features. You can approach Dartmouth by road, ferry, and even steam train so access is very good - but as it is well off the main Exeter to Plymouth road there is little traffic just passing through - Dartmouth is a destination in itself. Facilities are very good with a range of eating places from family based to fine dining. Supermarkets range from the Co-op to a Marks and Spencer Food Hall plus small delicatessens. There is a library with free computer use and a small cinema. Crabbing is a particular Dartmouth pastime for children. Walks out to Dartmouth Castle (operated by English Heritage) ,where tea and scones can be had, are particularly popular, though as it is the coast path , it leads right around the South West coast. Dartmouth is a place with something for everyone.

Dartmouth

This part of Devon is blessed with a rather special microclimate making it one of the warmest, sunniest parts of England.
