A large airy house of the typical Charentais style. originally the home of the land owner.

La Grand Maison offers great accommodation for 2 families which comprises of four large bedrooms and comfortably sleeps up to 4 adults and 3/4 children. There is one cot bed available for a smaller child. Plus the sofa bed in the main lounge could provide a sleeping place for two extra sharing children or small adults?

The very large and bright first floor bathroom offers 'his and her' sinks, a large corner bath and WC. Full length French Windows unlock the light allowing you to bath with nothing but the open sky looking back at you.

The large bedrooms are divided into two double beds and two twin bedrooms upstairs and can be found directly off the long hallway. All rooms benefit from high ceilings and large French windows with their own shutters, bed side tables and lamps.
The downstairs bedroom (5th) can be used as a second lounge or playroom for the children

The Large Lounge

The main lounge gives a very French welcome with its log burning fire and painted brick walls, two very comfortable sofas and the perfect place to retire with your vin Rose when the light in the Jardin fades.
There is also a downstairs toilet beyond the lounge.

The Kitchen

The rustic, generous size kitchen, is simple, but, offers the usual fundamentals, oven, Fridge/freezer, washing machine, tumble dryer, kettle, toaster, dining furniture, pots, pans and crockery etc.The room boasts a large open fire, which is used in the winter months.

Outside in the Garden

There's plenty of room to laze in full sun within the south facing garden or shelter in a peaceful shady spot.
An out of ground pool 25ft x 12ft x 4ft deep will keep you cool on the days you feel too relaxed to go out exploring. The garden is mostly private and self contained within a gated, walled and fenced area.
The back part of the property looks across the tree lined landscape and fields, while the barns receive constant attention from the Black Redstarts, Swallows, Martins and Doves that have made them their home. Look out for the Red Squirrels, which are quite common in this area and at night you may be lucky enough to see the Nightjar, whilst listening to the Nightingales who start their show around 11pm.
The Village has few street lights and almost no light pollution, so on a clear night the stars shine abundant, bright and clear.

The Nouvelle-Aquitaine region

It is situated in the lovely and beautiful charm of the South West of France.
From the beautiful Atlantic coast, between the châteaux and the castles of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards, lies Poitou-Charentes, one of the sunniest parts of the French south western coast. Its mild climate - 2,250 hours of sunshine per year makes it desirable to visit anytime from early spring to late autumn. A 300 mile-long coastline with fine sandy beaches, backed by fragrant pine forests, lively resorts such as La Rochelle, Royan and the islands of Oléron, Aix and Ré provide attractions to tempt everyone from the beachcomber to the bathing belle.

The Poitou - Charente region is rich in history. You will find a host of historic chateaux and many fine Romanesque churches and Roman sites notably the amphitheatre at Saintes.

On the coast, about 50 mins from us, lie the fascinating towns of La Rochelle, the Napoleonic naval base of Rochefort and, in the other direction inland Cognac, with its internationally renowned brandy's, provides another opportunity for a "day out". Saintes has a spectacular Roman amphitheatre.

Charente Maritime is noted for its exceptional number of sunshine hours (second only to the Riviera). Sunny days and starry, starry nights are normal here!
The Aulnay / Dampierre sur Boutonne area
The house is situated in the small village of Saint Hilliare 5 mins from the heart of Dampirre Sur Boutonne and 12 mins from Aulnay. Our area is flat or gently rolling which, together with unusually little traffic makes it an ideal area for leisurely strolls and family bike rides. Try cycling for 20 mins to the village of Chize where you can buy your freshly made croissants, chocolat, buerre or Almond?

Few can resist the markets, notably those at Aulnay (Thursday and especially Sunday) and St Jean d'Angely (Wednesday and Saturday) St Jean d'Angely is a wonderful Town with a number of fine restaraunts and is less than 20 mins from the house.

There is a small shop in Dampiere sur Boutonne where you can buy your daily bread, obtain emergency supplies, hire bikes etc. For supermarket shopping, Aulnay, or St Jean d'Angely are your most likely destinations.

Of tourisy interest is the Renaissance chateau at Dampierre sur Boutonne and the church at Aulnay is a UNESCO classed "world heritage site" .
Aulnay has its own public swimming pool, which is open all the summer season,

The combination of the words "Charente" and "Maritime" help to capture the magic of this department – producing as it does the best from the land with the Cognac grapes, cereal crops and fields of sunflowers – and the best from the ocean with the oysters, mussels and fish. Located with the Atlantic to the west of its 150 mile coastline, the Vendee and Deux-Sevres to the north, the Dordogne to the east and the Gironde to the south, the Charente-Maritime is a magnificent and exceptional part of France.

Dampierre-sur-Boutonne

If you love the countyside and all its natural glory, you will love the Charante. Yes, you are less than an hours drive from some of the best beaches in France and its beautiful Atlantic Coast line. Yes, there are oudles of quaint little market towns with fresh local produce to inspire your culinary curiosity. Yes there's an abundance of vinyards waiting to supply you with your whole holidays supply of presevative free Vin Rouge, Rose or Blanc. But if you can still remember what it used to be like to stroll through the countyside without the sound of road traffic obscuring the sound of happy bird song, or housing estates blocking your vista of field upon field of farm land, laiden with its crops such as in this case, sunflowers, corn on the cob, rape seed and poppy fields. With roads that are crying out for you and your family to cycle to its hearts content. Then this is the place for you to come see. They say its what the English Country side was like sixty years ago. You'll love it here and you wont want to leave when your holiday ends.
