Location description from owner

The Scotland region

The Royal Burgh of Cullen is a charming historic fishing village located overlooking Cullen Bay on the Moray Firth coastline in the northeast of Scotland. This picturesque village is divided into two sections including Seatown in the lower section, which features many colourful and quaint traditional fishing cottages, and the upper section where most of the village amenities are located including an array of shops and cafes. Cullen is the home of the culinary delight "Cullen Skink" which is a well-known traditional soup made from smoked haddock, potatoes, onions and milk. As well, the Ice Cream Shop in Cullen is famous for its quality ice cream and its wide array of jarred sweets and is a favourite of both locals and visitors to Cullen.

Cullen has a fabulous sandy beach which has been recognized previously by the EU as being of the highest standard in Europe and is home to the much photographed rock strata of The Three KIngs. The Cullen Golf Club is located along the beach and provides what has been described as a challenging little clifftop and beach level links course like no other for its quirkiness but still suitable for golfers of all skill levels. There are three majestic Railway Viaducts in Cullen dating from 1886 which act to define the village and have also been the subject of many photographers. They are no longer in use but are now a popular walking and cycling route along which you might be lucky enough to spot a dolphin or even a minke whate in the Bay!

Cullen is suitable destination for old and young alike. Water sports, nature watching, golf, cycling, walking or just browsing through the shops - there is something for everyone.

Cullen

The Banffshire Coast is home to a diversity of wildlife and beautiful rugged landscapes and has a relatively mild climate. The area is rich with history and heritage based on fishing and agriculture which provides the foundation for many excellent visitor attractions and festivals celebrating the traditions of the area. Cullen provides a terrific base for attractions such as the Malt Whiskey Trail and the Castle Trail which are only a short drive away.

“Beautiful coastal property”

Reviewed 6 Oct 2015

My wife and I have just enjoyed a wonderful weeks holiday in Hilllcrest Cottage Cullen. The owners, Selma and Rob, were there to greet us and show us around. They had left us a welcome pack and had also given us flowers, and a miniature whisky because it was our wedding anniversary. The property is very well appointed and clean. The position is excellent, with easy access to the town.

Thanks so much for taking the time to review your recent visit to Hill Crest. We are flattered you chose our cottage to celebrate your anniversary and really pleased for you that the weather was so lovely for your celebration after a not so great summer this year. Hope to see you again in 2016! Best wishes, Selma & Rob

“Great place to stay”

Reviewed 28 Jul 2015

Well appointed, great location with fabulous views, superb holiday house. Warm welcome from friendly owners. 300 yards from Co-op, cash machine, pub, chippie, chinese take-away and ice-cream shop.

Thanks for taking the time to provide a review of your stay at Hill Crest. We agree Hill Crest is a special home away from home in a great location and still convenient to all the local amenities. We hope to see you again for your next holiday in Cullen! Selma & Rob

“The best appointed holiday cottage we've ever had”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2015

This was a really fantastic cottage. The place is wonderful: the sea is down below just outside the front door, or just outside the garden, and most of the rooms have views to it. The garden is decked, with a lovely open gazebo you can eat in, with views out to the sea. And the area is lovely: Cullen itself is very nice, as are many of the little fishing (or ex-fishing) villages along the coast. It's not all that far to Aviemore and the Cairngorms, and there are lots of whisky distilleries much closer than that, all along the banks of the beautiful Spey. What really struck us, though, was that this cottage has everything. We've never enjoyed a kitchen and its utensils as much. And there were plentiful supplies of all the basics, so you didn't need to rush out to a shop even to settle in for the first night. Really fantastic.

Thank so very much for reviewing your recent stay at Hill Crest. We do our best to provide a comfortable environment for holidaymakers and are so pleased that our visitors are enjoying the property and all it has to offer. I think having a well stocked kitchen just makes life a little easier when you are trying to prepare a meal in unfamiliar surroundings. Hope to see you again for your next Scottish getaway! Selma & Rob

“Outstanding, lovingly maintained cottage with spectacular views of Cullen Bay.”

Reviewed 9 Mar 2015

Beautifully decorated, furnished, well equipped and maintained cottage. The owners go that extra mile to ensure their guests have everything they could possibly need. Lots of nice touches, welcome basket, dressing gowns and luxury toiletries. The decked area, was even in March a very special place to sit and take in the breathtaking views. Cullen is a lovely community, offering a variety of individual shops, cafés and restaurant. Great base to explore this fabulous coast line. We loved every minute!

Thank you so much for your wonderful review of your stay at Hill Crest. We would love to have you stay again any time. Selma & Rob

“New Year Break”

Reviewed 3 Jan 2015

The cottage was wonderful! So well equipped, tastefully decorated through-out, and ideally situated within walking distance from the harbour and beach. There is a lovely seating area in the garden which we were able to utilise, even on New Year's Eve! Having lived in Cullen as a young child, I know the area well and am aware of all it has to offer. I would strongly recommend this cottage and destination if you are looking for somewhere to totally chill-out, unwind and re-charge your batteries. It's a 10/10 from me!

Thanks so much for the great review. We're glad you were able to accomplish your goal of having a few days to yourselves to just relax after the holiday chaos. Hope to see you again soon! Selma & Rob

“absolutely fabulous.”

Reviewed 14 Oct 2014

Hill Crest was the most perfect accommodation we have booked. The house was so well equipped we played the "whats not here" game. Needless to say we could find nothing. Cullen was a nice place to visit and the location of Hill Crest was idyllic. To be honest we can't wait to go back. Selma and Rob have a fantastic work ethic and this can be seen throughout the house and garden. Wonderful.

Thanks so much for those wonderful comments! We had a good laugh about the "what's not here" game. When we outfitted the property I did the exact same thing in order to be sure nothing was missing - I guess it worked! Looking forward to your next visit. Selma & Rob

“Comfortable, beautiful, relaxing - would love to come again”

Reviewed 15 Sep 2014

We stayed in this wonderful cottage for a week in August. Selma was very helpful in advance already, offering to pick two of us up at the nearest train station. When we arrived at Hill Crest we were welcomed by a lovely basket of goodies and flowers, and having had a look into all the rooms it was clear that we'd have a great holiday. There is everything you need to make you feel comfortable, and the views are stunning. No matter what the weather is like, this cottage is just perfect.

We are so pleased you enjoyed your visit to Cullen and your stay at Hill Crest. It was no problem at all to give your friends a lift to the cottage and we were happy to do it. Hope to hear from you again regarding another visit. Selma & Rob

“A relaxing holiday in a beautiful setting”

Reviewed 1 Sep 2014

The location is superb but the owners have also created an environment that is stylish, spotlessly clean and very conducive to relaxing. The views of dolphins in the bay and of sunsets over Portnockie are amazing. We spent a week here and could have easily stayed on for another week as the tranquil atmosphere of Cullen and the cottage itself made us feel that the holiday had done us all good.

Thank you so very much for the wonderful complements. The best part of Hill Crest for us as owners is hearing such great feedback from our guests. We hope to see you again! Selma & Rob

“Excellent holiday home”

Reviewed 26 Jul 2014

This holiday home has everything that can be available. Great accommodation. Everything that you would require in the kitchen. Superb room spaces. Dinning room and living room are spacious and the view from the home across cullen bay is unrivalled. Add to this the gazebo, decking with table and chairs and then the barbie area, then this is palace that we will return to for a relaxing week and recommend to all our friends.

We're so glad you felt Hill Crest "has it all" because that's exactly what we have aimed for - a holiday home in an incredible location that has everything you might need for a comfortable and pleasant vacation. See you next summer! Selma & Rob
