Location description from owner

The Andalucia region

Cuevas del Almanzora is one of the oldest towns of the provence and lies in the fertile valley of the Almanzora River. Costa Almeria is Situated in Spain's South-East Corner between Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. Its claim to fame as Spain's sunniest spot and its managed to stay under the radar of most holiday makers. It means golden beaches and rugged desert scenery are yours for the taking and there are lots of traditional spanish villages where you can get a taste of real Spain including staying at our house Cuevas Del Almanzora!

Great temperatures all year round and an average of 320 sunny days per year. Temperatures start hotting up around Easter and peak in July and August to around 30-32 degrees. Temperatures are mild in the winter too with daytime temperatures of around 18 degrees. Nights can be a little bit chilly so good to bring a jacket.

The town got its name from the many artificial caves in the nearby hills once inhabited by the miners. This was the start of an age of splendour for the town. The impressive legacy of this silver rush can be seen all around from the elegant family houses of the mining barons to the grand avenues, churches and statues. Many grand old houses remain and it is well worth walking round the old town of Cuevas to gaze at the impressive bourgeois architecture, many are still inhabited. A number of these can be found in the Plaza de la Consitucion and around the town hall. There are many places of interest in the town for example - The Castillio de Cuevas Del Almanzora (Castle) & The parish church de la Encarnacion.

Other places of interest that are within driving distance from our house are:

Tabernas Desert - The desert area around the village of Tabernas was used in loads of spaghetti westerns including a fistful of dollars, the good the bad and the ugly and once upon a time in the west. Nowadays 3 of the film sets have been turned into western-style theme parks complete with dusty saloons and cowboy stunt shows.

Granada - Alhambra Palace. Perched on a hilltop with the Sierra Nevada mountains as a backdrop, Granada's Alhambra complex is one of Spain's must see attractions. It was built by the Moors centuries ago as a palace/fortress and showcases richly decorated rooms, shady gardens and trickling fountains. Its worth booking your tickets in advance as there are only a limited number each day.

Cabo de Gata National Park - if you like your beaches quiet & peaceful then head for Cabo de Gato National Park. Endless beaches to choose from, rugged coves or huge kilometre-long sweeps of sand. Take a picnic as most don't have much in the way of facilities.

The City of Almeria with its port, museums, palm lines plazas and Arab fortress, La Rambla - a wide tree lined avenue that splits the city. To the West are tranquil squares & medieval buildings and to the East is the new part which is home to stylish boutiques and art galleries. Durning the last two weeks of August Almeria hosts Our Lady of the Sea Festival. The whole city takes on a carnival feel with music, dancing, parades and sports competitions and also traditional flamenco festival in the Plaza Vieja.

Cuevas del Almanzora

Cuevas Del Almanzora is still a very Spanish town with not many residents speaking English but it is still a very friendly town where you can go in to the bars and restaurants and order food or drink even if you speak very little Spanish.

Although the House is situated in the centre of the town very close by to all the amenities it is tucked out of the way on a little pedestrianised street just round the corner from everything. There is plenty of parking near the house. Once you have parked up after a day at the beach, pool, cycling or golfing you can walk round the corner from the house to Spanish bars & enjoy a beer for about 1Euro - 1.25 Euro, & have some tapas should you wish.

There is a market in Cuevas situated in the old part of the town in front of the Castle on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Supermarkets, shops, bars & restaurants are all within walking distance from the house.

Although the house does not have a pool there are 2 pools with nice facilities that we use:

Desert Springs Golf Resort - 5 minutes drive from the house has a lovely pool where you can go, rent a sunbed and spend the day. Bar Snacks/Lunches are available. Small childrens pool.

Pool at Bar Lua - Puerto Rey (shown in the photo section. This is our favourite as it is right by the beach) Pool is shallow at both ends and deeper in the middle, small childrens play area, showers by the pool, toilets, grass around the pool where the sunbeds are, order drinks by the pool, cost of the sunbed rental is 5 Euros. The restaurant features lovely thatched roofs, there is a 'menu del dia' which is good value, pizza's or tapas at the bar.

The Beaches are all within a 10-20 minute drive from the house. You have Vera Playa/Garrucha (10 minutes drive) Mojacar (15-20 minutes drive) & San J0an del los Terranos (15 minutes drive) to choose from. The beaches in Mojacar & Garrucha are blue flag beaches. There are snorkelling and scuba diving schools nearby as well as tennis courts in Puerto del Rey. Head to Mojacar for watersports and nightlife.Park

Aquatico Vera/Vera Water Park - Plenty of flumes, kids slides and pool, wave machine, shaded picnic areas. (10 minute drive)

Garrucha Go-karts - 2 tracks and 3 types of karts - good fun.

GOLFING

Desert Spring 'The Indiana' is an 18 hole par 72 course & Europes only desert golf course designed by Peter McEvoy the sucessful Walker Cup Captain. Driving Range, Buggy Hire, Professional Tuition, Bar & Restaurant (5 minute Drive)

Valle De Este - 18 hole par 71 golf course. Driving Range, Buggy Hire, Bar, Restaurant. (10- 15 minutes drive)

Marina de la Torre, Mojacar - 18 hole 72 par on Mojacar Playa. Flat Fairways adjacent to the sea. Driving Range, Buggy Hire,Bar & Restaurant. (15-20 minutes drive)

Cortijo Grande, Turre - Established 9 hole golf course in the foot hills of the Sierra Cabrerra. Buggy Hire & Bar. (15-20 minute drive)

For English speaking bars, restaurants & Nightlife head for Mojacar Playa, Vera Playa or Villaricos all within a 10-18 minute drive away depending on which one you decide.

If you visit Mojacar Playa for food or the beach don't leave without visiting Mojacar Pueblo (old town) this is a very traditional Andalucian white village with excellent quality restaurants and fantastic views.

EATING OUT -
Numerous local tapas bars and restuarants in Cuevas near the house. You will find a list in the house of the ones that ourselves and other guests have visited.

If you like fish then Garrucha is the place to go, if you like lamb then there is a lovely restaurant in the mountainous village of Bedar which is definately worth a visit for the Lamb and the views! (Bedar 15-20 minute drive)
