Location description from manager

The England region

The South West has arguably some of the most dramatic and enchanting scenery in England. North Devon is proud to boast its rugged coastlines, clean sandy beaches, wide estuaries and a particularly intense clear estuary light, green countryside, wooded valleys and open moorlands. Walk the coastal path, cycle ride the Tarka Trail or across the moor, fish in the many rivers or open seas, horse-ride along the beach or across Exmoor, surf, sail, wind-surf, kite-surf or just build your castle in the sand!

So if you are looking to get away from it all and relax or to be active and explore, there is always something to suit all of the family in North Devon.

Wander around traditional fishing villages or along sandy beaches. Explore unspoilt landscapes and a wealth of attractions. Unwind at a spa or get active and try one of the water-sports in Devon. Many attractions have special offers and free events and there are so many natural playgrounds including Exmoor, Dartmoor, and, on your doorstep, the coast.

A short walk away from the beautiful sandy beach and National Trust headland of Baggy Point, a couple of minutes by car from Saunton Sands, Putsborough and Woolacombe beaches. The North Devon surfer's Mecca of Croyde with its family friendly golden shore replete with cafe, shop and showers, offers both surfing and riding schools. The area has spectacular scenery to rival any found within the UK and boasts coastal and inland walks to satisfy walkers of all levels of ability. Golfing enthusiasts are well catered for with several excellent courses within "driving range", notably the famous Saunton Sands Club. Other attractions include boat/fishing hire and ferries to Lundy from Ilfracombe, several adventure/theme parks nearby, Watermouth Castle, Arlington Court and a little further The Big Sheep at Abbotsham and The Milky Way at Clovelly.

Croyde

For spectacular scenery and beautiful beaches whatever the season, there's no better place in England than North Devon coast and in particular Croyde. The beaches are recognised as possibly some of the finest and cleanest in Europe - with two miles of soft golden sand, plenty of rock pools and amazing surf.

Croyde is not only the renowned surf capital of the West Country but is also a beautiful quaint village of unique charm and character with its thatched cottages, rolling hills and the pretty stream that winds its way through to the idyllic sandy beach. The area surrounding Croyde is the perfect place for the outdoor adventurer with Baggy Point close by offering spectacular walks around the cliffs as well as specialised rock climbing. The Goldcoast Festival is held each year on the headland overlooking the beach with large stage and major music entertainment including Ed Sheeran, Ben Howard, Jason Moraz, Newton Faulkner and many more and includes countless sporting competitions. There is tuition available for surfing and numerous other watersports.

Croyde beach lies between the headlands of Baggy Point to the north and Saunton Down to the south. This is one of the most popular beaches in the South West for surfers, and there is also windsurfing, sailing and canoeing. To the north Putsborough Beach can be found with its three miles of golden sands extending to Woolacombe.

The beach has a café/restaurant, toilets with facilities for disabled visitors, and disabled access to the beach. There is deckchair hire, surfboard hire, first-aid, lifeguards, and a lost child centre. The beach has a dog restricted area, pay car parking, and there are nearby shops and a wildlife reserve.

Golf can be enjoyed at Saunton where there are 2 championship courses with further courses at Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Barnstaple.

The nearby village of Georgeham is home to the renowned Rock Inn where gourmet meals can be enjoyed in its informal and relaxing atmosphere. Stroll through the narrow lanes admiring the many period cottages, thatched roofs and cottage gardens (including the former home of Henry Williamson, author of Tarka The Otter!) down to the traditional shop - the hub of the village!

A few miles inland is the bustling village of Braunton, where you will find many shops, cafes and the famous Squires fish and chip shop. Cycle hire facilities are also available to explore the Tarka Trail along the estuary, into Barnstaple and as far as Instow, Bideford and beyond.

“Exceeded our expectations”

Reviewed 11 Aug 2012

A very well presented and furnished to a high standard cottage in a superb location within Croyde Bay. Our party was made up of two families and the cottage catered very well for this offering an upstairs for one and downstairs for another. A large communal living and dining area and a full equipped kitchen with a complimentary welcome basket of goodies. The Garden area was large enough for everyone to dine and we enjoyed a bar b que in the evening. A stones throw from the beach, good local pubs, restaurants and shops. Very close to other beaches all with parking. We were lucky enough to be blessed with great weather and really didn't need to leave this location as the beach is fantastic and not too busy, perfect for all ages. One of the best places we have visited and would seriously revisit and stay in Bay Cottage.

Hi There, Thank You for your lovely review and we are very pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the house! We look forward to welcoming you back to Bay cottage in the future! Kind Regards Ocean Cottages

“Amazing, everyone should stay here”

Reviewed 13 Jun 2012

The cottage surpassed my expectations! I could not belive when we walked in how amazing it was. It is very modern, clean and beautifully decorated. It is so well equipped. We travelled with our 3yr old and 1 yr old and there were books and toys there adequate enough that the children did not play with their own toys we took. They even had childrens DVDs available to watch. The kitchen is very well equipped with everything you would need - there was even childrens utensils and plates. There was wi-fi internet, high chair, cot, we didnt want to leave to come home. I cannot recommend this property enough. It would easily sleep 8 and if you are thinking of taking a holiday and looking at this cottage - BOOK IT!! You will not be dissapointed. I found the company dealing with this property exteremely friendly and polite and no question was too much hassle for them before our stay. I would very highly booking any of their accomodation.

Hi There, We are very pleased that you had a good stay at Bay Cottage and that everything was satisfactory for you and your family, thank you for the lovely review! We look forward to welcoming you back in the future. Kind Regards Ocean Cottages

“Fabulous holiday home in a perfect location”

Reviewed 30 Jan 2012

We travelled with friends to this holiday home in Croyde. Fabulously located in the centre of the village close to all the shops and pubs. The house has been stylishly furnished with light and airy beach house feel. It is comfortable and spacious. We stayed with friends who have four small children, it worked perfectly as the owners themselves have young children and have thought about the layout and what is needed for a family holiday home.

Very pleased that you had a wonderful time! Yes, the owners have thought of all those little touches which make going no holiday with your family much more enjoyable! We look forward to welcoming you to Bay Cottage again in the future! Ocean Cottages

“A fantastic holiday home in a fabulous location”

Reviewed 4 Oct 2011

My wife and I stayed at Bay Cottage with our four young children (all under the age of five). The house is not only light and airy, it is really well furnished. Fantastic for big families - plenty of space inside and out - with lots of toys and games (and a DVD player!) to keep the kids occupied. The entertaining areas inside and out are great - we comfortably catered for friends visiting for dinner. Location couldn't be better - on a quiet road, but pretty much in the middle of the village, a two minute walk from the Thatch (village pub) and Billy Budds (great for the kids - with a climbing frame in the beer garden - and on the way back from the beach, so handy for a post-beach beer in the sunshine). The walk to the beach itself is a lovely route along a rural footpath from the village so it's easy (even with four kids in tow) and safe. Only one thing which could be improved is a guarantee on the weather! Would totally recommend the house. We loved it and look forward to going back next year!

We are delighted you enjoyed your stay... look forward to welcomingn you back to Bay Cottage again in the future. Ocean Cottages
