Location description from owner
The East Anglia region
Situated at the end of an unmade road (Loke), Forty Winks is located between Upper and Lower Southrepps just over 4 miles from, Cromer to the North, Mundesley to the East and the market town of North Walsham to the South. Forty winks is only a 10 minute walk from Gunton station on the main Norwich to Cromer / Sheringham line. The Southrepps common Nature reserve covers much of Lower Southrepps and has special status. From Forty Winks it is a 20 minute walk to the Vernon Arms public house which in addition to liquid refreshment provides hot meals at a reasonable price.
North Norfolk is renowned for its spectacular coastline, fantastic wildlife, miles of glorious beaches, seaside communities and a beautiful hinterland of rolling countryside and picturesque market towns and villages.
North Norfolk must be the birdwatching capital of the UK, and you can even take a boat trip to see our seal colony at Blakeney Point.
Between the lively seaside resort of Hunstanton and the pretty town of Sheringham is a spectacular coastline, most of which is designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Here the landscape of tidal marshes, creeks, shingle spits, and sweeping golden beaches is backed by Christmas-scented pine woods. It includes the Holkham Estate, and its beach at Wells-next-the-Sea, voted the best beach in Britain.
Further to the East is the imperious clifftop setting of Cromer, with its Victorian pier striding proudly out to sea. The coastline then meanders southward to the secluded beaches of Mundesley and Happisburgh, and inland to the traditional market town of North Walsham. The magic of north Norfolk is that as the seasons and tides change, it offers completely different qualities and scenery.
The North Norfolk Railway begins and ends at genteel Holt, a fabulously handsome market town which has become a mecca for discerning visitors looking for independent shops. Most of Holt was burned in its famous fire of 1708, and in its place rose a splendid Georgian town focusing on an appealing Market Place. Just outside the town is Letheringsett Mill, lovingly restored to former glory on the River Glaven.
This is also Deep History Coast, where the biggest and best-preserved mammoth skeleton was found, along with a prehistoric flint axe and 850,000 year old human footprints!

“Amazing tranquil location”
Found Forty Winks on Trip Advisor, Never been to Norfolk but know it's a beautiful place. Forty winks had only a few reviews as it's only been open a few months, but we took the risk anyway as it looked stunning, we booked 3 nights. We arrived on the 13th Aug 2015 at around 5pm, on arrival we were greeted by Sally and her Husband Chris who were quick to show us around and show us how everything worked. The lodge itself was a little gem, totally separate from the main house where Sally and Chris live, this made it feel private and it felt like out own little home away from home. The lodge had everything we needed, it was very clean and cosy and even included a continental breakfast including a choice on the bread and milk ' great as me and my wife only use Semi Skimmed milk. Little things like this make a huge difference, the hospitality of Sally and Chris was simply amazing. They are always at hand to help with anything, both have great knowledge of the area and are the best people to ask for places to visit, if it wasn't for Chris we wouldn't of seen the Seals at Horsey ' A truly amazing experience for me and my wife. Each day they would recommend places for us to visit and we were never let down by the experience, Great Yarmouth was stunning and took no more than an hour and that's with stopping off for a coffee. Cromer was only around the corner and that too was stunning, we certainly wasn't short of things to do and places to see ' infact we wish we booked 7 days. Forty Winks is deep in the Norfolk country side, so if you like being out in the wilderness then you will love this place. You could hear a pin drop at night its was that quiet ' and at night it was totally pitch black. We live in the city and are always surrounded by an orange glow, so this made the late nights very tranquil. I could go on and on about how amazing this place is, but you will have to experience it to truly understand. We are certainly booking Forty Winks again, Sally and Chris are amazing friendly people and soon became good friends. Can't wait until next time so Thank you Forty Winks
Thank you so much for your wonderful review. Your compliments are appreciated. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay, and were able to enjoy many of the local attractions. We really look forward to seeing you again in the future. Best wishes Sally and Chris.
“Lovely rooms and hosts in a beautiful, tranquil location.”
We did this a late booking and so glad we did. Sally and Chris are the perfect hosts, good array of foods available for the continental style breakfast; rooms furnished to a high specification. Fabulous area to sit outside and just enjoy the peace and quiet and local wildlife - managed to spot a family of deer early one morning - priceless.
Thank you so much for your review, and we look forward to you returning to Forty Winks at some time in the future.
