Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Central Scotland is compact and serviced by three international airports, Glasgow, Prestwick and Edinburgh. Castles, culture, gardens, world-class shopping, restaurants and service with a smile are all here. The Trossachs and Loch Lomond National Park showcase wonderful Scottish scenery, but every corner you turn will provide another delightful vista.Argyll offers Inverary castle and Jail, the famous Loch Fyne Oyster Bar, a new marina at Portavadie with a great restaurant, wonderful gardens, fantastic walking and golf and lots more. These are all easily visited on a day trip by car from Bute.

Craigmore

The Island of Bute is one of three main Islands in the Firth of Clyde, the others are Arran and Cumbrae. It has been a holiday destination since Victorian times. Visitors have been attracted by the mild climate, great facilities, family atmosphere and stunning scenery. Mountstuart House, ancestral home to the Marquis of Bute is a world-class neo-gothic mansion, which had the first indoor swimming pool in the UK. Admire the beautiful marble chapel, where Stella McCartney was married. The gardens are equally gorgeous. It was a private family home until a few years ago.Bute hosts a number of festivals, including Jazz in the first weekend of May which has an international reputation. The Highland Games are a fantastic spectacle in August. There is a wide range of restaurants and pubs, all serving good food, much of it produced locally on the Island, eg lamb, beef, cheese, pickles, eggs and sea-food. There are two supermarkets, two butchers and two fish-shops as well as wonderful ice-cream from Zavaronis! Other facilities include a small hospital, indoor swimming pool, three golf courses and fishing opportunities.

“Fabulous home, wonderful situation”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2012

This is one of the best places we have ever stayed - anywhere in the world!! The house was wonderful – quite the best we have stayed in. It is beautifully and comfortably furnished and everything needed for a holiday had been considered. So much so that both of our sons and their wives have asked us to go back again sometime. The views are amazing - on a good day we could see right up the Kyles of Bute. We also saw magnificent sunsets. We strolled through woods near the back of the house where we saw red deer. We saw seals from the dining room window and porpoises from the front of the house. We even saw an osprey near St Ninian’s Point. The garden was great. we picked raspberries for breakfast. There is a BBQ and a very prettyand well tended back garden. The conservatory meant we could enjoy the sunshine even if it was a bit breezy. We have previously stayed with our family in golf resorts as we are all golfers, but Oceanus suited us better as there was lots for everyone to do, other than and as well as golf. We played all three couses. The course at Kingarth was nicely suited for holiday golf when friends visited us. Bute is great for geocaching and good to find fantastic places with interesting features. The viewpoint at Scalpsie Bay is to be recommended. We do hope to return sometime in the future.

“A great find !”

Reviewed 16 Sep 2011

Oceanus was indeed a 'great find' Beautiful, spacious house with the most amazing views. Peaceful, relaxing, comfortable, just a great place to get away from it all and 'chill out'. Our pet lab, Jack also felt so at home and enjoyed swimming every day at all the different bays around the island. Great, secure garden for our dog. A few, nice eating places too and lovely walks. If you are looking for a place to re-charge your batteries then this is the place. Would love to return.
