The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The Languedoc-Roussillon region borders the Mediterranean to the east and the Pyrenees Mountains to the south. It benefits from an exceptional climate and has an unusually rich wildlife, a spectacular coast, and surprising history. Things to see include mountains, rivers and lakes, ancient cities, thermal springs, abbeys, and cathedrals, chateaux and castles, notably the famous mountain fortresses popularly known as Cathar Castles. It possesses a number of World Heritage sites, including Carcassonne and its fairy-tale castle, the Canal du Midi, and the Pont du Gard.

Coustouge

There are fantastic walks on the doorstep into the vineyards and hills and cycling is also very popular with both locals and tourists.During the summer months there are numerous music festivals in the area each year and a world renowned jazz festival at Conilhac in October. The Cathar chateaux of Queribus and Peryperteuse as well as Villerouge Les Thermes are a short drive away, as is the walled Cathar village of Minerve. Bars, cafes and restaurants are nearby in Fontjoncouse, St. Laurent, Ferrals and Fabrezan. Fishing is available in Coustouge. Local products such as Coustouge honey and Corbieres wine are sold in the village. “Great location for visiting Carcassonne, the Med. or lazing in pool”

Reviewed 8 Jul 2013

Gite was good esp. pool for teenage grandchildren. Very friendly & helpful villagers. Lots of places to visit nearby. Carcassonne & Canal du Midi a must. Lots of nice villages & Cathar castles near and only 40 mins from the Med. Also owner has another gite next door if you want to take lots of friends.
