Description

The first floor studio is located at the entry into the Roman spa town of Rennes-les-Bains, with a superb, relaxing location overlooking the warm waters of the River Salz. The good-sized "clic-clac" sofabed sleeps 2 comfortably, with a "zed bed" for a small 3rd person and a travel cot for a baby/toddler if required. ( Please note that there is only room for a maximum of three people; one or two fit comfortably, but a third can be accommodated either on the zed bed or in the travel cot ).

There is a small kitchen for self catering, and a separate shower room with wc.

From April to October the thermal baths are open, specialising in cures for rheumatism. The new, naturally heated open air swimming pool is open to all for a small charge ( last season it cost 5 euros 50 for adults, 2 euros 50 for children aged 3 - 12), and is a few metres away from the apartment building. If you prefer, you can bathe in the hot springs of the river free of charge.

Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The area around Rennes-les-Bains, situated at the foot of the Pyrenees, is a perfect spot for nature and history lovers alike. In the heart of Cathar country, it offers the opportunity for hiking, mountain biking, cycling, white water sports, climbing, and fishing. For those seeking history and culture, there are several Cathar Castles within easy reach, a Dinosaur museum, and acres of vineyards just waiting to be discovered.

Carcassonne has an entire city that is a castle, "La Cité", the fortified upper city. These massive ramparts on a hill provide spectacular views of the lower city below. Take a relaxing stroll along the cobblestone streets, browse the shops selling Medieval wares, or sample the classic peasant stew "cassoulet" in one of the many cafés and restaurants. Perpignan (70km) and Narbonne (82 km) are cities brimming with history, and on Saturdays the markets sell everything from fruit and vegetables, to wine and local produce. The smaller, medieval towns of Limoux and Lagrasse transport you back in time, and whether sightseeing, wine-tasting or enjoying the vastness of the open countryside, you will never be short of something to do in the beautiful region of the Aude.

Couiza

Halfway between the Mediterranean and the Pyrenees, in the heart of Cathar country, sandwiched between Mount Cardou (796 m) and Pic Bugarach (1231 m) in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Rennes is one of the many spas in the Languedoc-Roussillon. People have enjoyed the natural hot spring waters here for millennia. The town is sited next to both hot and cold springs, and also by a saline river. The river Salz takes its name from the fact that it is naturally salty, an unusual feature for an inland river.

Rennes-les-Bains is 48 km south from Carcassonne, 20 km from Limoux, and 3 km from Rennes-le-Château. It lies in the Corbières, the heart of "Cathar country" and has been a spa town since Roman times. In recent years it has become well-known for its role in Kate Mosse's 2007 novel Sepulchre, which is based in and around Rennes-les-Bains. It is a sister village of Rennes-le-Chateau, made famous by "The Da Vinci Code" and its supposed links with Bertrand de Blanchefort, Grand Master of the Knights Templars.

The thermal swimming pool (piscine) at Rennes les Bains is open in the afternoons from early April every day except Monday. Closing time varies from 6.30pm to 8pm depending on the season. For more information:

“affordable tranquility in a lovely village”

Reviewed 16 Jul 2013

my partner and myself stayed at this accomodation for four wonderful nights. The studio apartment for us was adequate, with cooking facilities and all the little extras you may have forgot ( ie, plugs, adaptors, iron) lovely views out of first floor window overlooking river. there are great walks locally and lots of places to visit in such an exciting area..approx. 40 miles to sun drenched beaches..wonderful Carcassonne only 1 euro to visit on train from next village..had a great time, so chilled..

Thank you for your kind words; I am pleased that you had such a lovely time. Come back again soon!
