The Rutland region
The Heart of England / Peak District / Leicestershire and Rutland region
Leicestershire and Rutland have a multitude of places of interest to discover.
Within a reasonable distance from Amberliegh Cottage are a host of interesting places to visit.
Cottesmore (pronounced Cotts'more as a result of its origins as Cotts Moor) is a picturesque stone village in the unspoilt county of Rutland. The local honey coloured stone, evident throughout all of the county, is well represented in Cottesmore and the village has been designated as a Conservation Area. Thatch is also used in a number of distinctive older, and modern, properties including the Sun Inn!
The Sun Inn is as pretty as the proverbial picture, the 17th century inn looks like everyone's idea of the quintessential English country pub, with its tidy thatched roof, whitewashed walls, hanging baskets and flagstoned courtyard. Inside it maintains its charms, thanks to flagged floors and beamed ceilings.
The Village store and Sub Post Office.
Daily newspapers, groceries, fresh bread, wines and spirits, video rental, National Lottery, foreign currency, travel insurance.
Rutland Water, Burgleigh House, Rockingham Castle, the old market town of Oakham and Market Harborough,The National Space Centre, Wistow Maze, and for shopping Fosse Park (with late night shopping) and Highcross. Twycross Zoo, Hinckley Golf Club, Rutland Water for birdwatching, and water sports including sailing.
The Rutland / Cottesmore area
If you enjoy tranquil walking, relaxing fishing, fervent bird-watching, active horse riding, peaceful cycling, a few rounds of golf then there is lots to do locally and lots of places to visit not to too far by car.
You can hire a bicycle at Rutland Water and enjoy the circumference of the lake cycling at your leisure. Take the family, you can hire bicycles with child carriages in tow.
Cottesmore is within easy reach of some of the East Midlands' most spectacular countryside and surrounded by places of historical heritage. It is ideally situated for walking, cycling, golf, and so many other activities. Close to Rutland Water, one of the largest man made reservoirs in Europe and renowned for it's outstanding beauty and world class sailing, windsurfing, fishing and birdwatching, is just three miles away, and Geoff Hamilton's Barnsdale Gardens (even closer and very inspirational) are incredibly popular attractions.
Rutland Railway Museum (0.3 Miles)
An open aired museum based in the heart of the rural East Midlands where the now extinct industry of home iron ore production is preserved for visitors.
Barnsdale Gardens (2.5 Miles)
Barnsdale Gardens is a joy to visit; 38 themed gardens, ponds and woodlands nestled in a quiet corner of the beautiful Rutland countryside, but just 10 minutes from Stamford and the A1.
Rutland Water (3 Miles)
One of Europe's largest man-made reservoirs, and England's premier fly fishing waters. The shoreline forms an important nature reserve for waterfowl, with the 3,500 acre waters being the haunt of boating and water-sport enthusiasts from miles around.
Rutland County Museum (4.3 Miles)
Rutland County Museum is the perfect introduction to England's smallest county. The special exhibitions gallery, museum shop and local studies library, leads into displays of archaeology, history and an extensive rural life collection.
Oakham Castle (4.3 Miles)

Launde Abbey (10.3 Miles)
In peaceful country surroundings in the heart of the East Midlands of England, yet only 30 minutes drive from the centre of Leicester, Launde Abbey retreat centre is a place of prayer and of welcome. It has a resident Anglican community and offers a varied programme of events which are open to all — whether they are of specific faith, or simply wanting to explore. There are also conference facilities available for groups who wish to use the peaceful and beautiful surroundings for their own events.
Burghley House & Park (14 Miles)
This historic Elizabethan house (circa 1587) features beautiful gardens with a serpentine lake designed by Lancelot Brown and also features a gothic greenhouse, stables and a picturesque summerhouse behind a scenic lake.

"Lovely house, wonderful area."
With five bedrooms and three bathrooms, this property was ideal for us to stay with our daughter and her family, and our two dogs, giving us all plenty of space to spread out. We had some lovely walks close by and Rutland Water only a few minutes away by car. The facilities in the house are superb, there was nothing that we needed that wasn't provided and we will definitely be going back next year.
