Description

Appletree Cottage, completed in May 2015, is our third and last farm building conversion at Cotmore Farm. It has the same stylish layout as the TripAdvisor award-winning Barn at Cotmore Farm, and the same level of finish: two large slate-floored bedrooms on the ground floor at courtyard level, one with a super-kingsize bed, the other either a twin or a super-kingsize, depending on configuration, and each with its own luxurious bathroom; bright and airy open-plan upstairs, with oak floors, vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, roof lights, fully equipped kitchen, comfy leather sofas, WiFi, woodburner; and direct access through double French doors to a private sun-trap garden terrace carved out of a green Devon bank, surrounded by steep banks filled with wildflowers, and a winding path leading up to the apple orchard. And of course you have all the amenities of the farm at hand: horses, piglets, chickens, sheep – endless entertainment for animal-loving children (and adults!).

Appletree Cottage, completed in May 2015, is our third and last farm building conversion at Cotmore Farm. And of course you have all the amenities of the farm at hand: horses, piglets, chickens, sheep – endless entertainment for animal-loving children (and adults!).

Located at the very end of the farm courtyard, Appletree Cottage is accessed through a sturdy oak door which gives to an entrance hall dominated by a large bookshelf brimming with modern fiction, colour reference books and and an exquisite range of children's picture books that will provide endless evening or rainy-day diversion. To the left, another ledged oak door opens to a limestone bathroom, with P-shaped bath, Grohe power shower, wall-hung basin, curved towelrad with eco-switch, and discreetly located toilet. This family bathroom doubles, via an ingenious Jack-and-Jill arrangement, as ensuite to the master bedroom, the next room along, where a 6ft super kingsize oak bed takes centre stage, flanked by bedside tables with LED stay-cool reading lamps. Painted wooden shutters in the master bedroom and bathroom allow precise control of light ingress, and on hotter days allow a cooling breeze to circulate while maintaining absolute privacy. Across the corridor, a spacious second bedroom can be configured with two singles or one super-kingsize bed, with easily enough room to add a travel cot. Another ensuite bathroom boasts a huge walk-in enclosure with Grohe power-shower, wall-hung basin, sensor-switched vanity mirror, curved towelrad with eco-switch, and discreetly located toilet. All downstairs areas benefit from touch-sensitive underfloor heating, individually controllable in each room.

A glass balustraded staircase winds up to the first floor, a stunning open-plan room where the architecture of the vaulted roof and exposed trusses of ancient pitch pine combine to create a sense of airy space and light. Views to the south and east look over gently rolling hills towards the sea at Beesands, while to the north, a wall of glass positively invites the countryside in. To the left, a compact but fully equipped kitchen and comfortable dining area mean you can cook with confidence if you don't fancy going out; to the right, two comfy leather sofas, a widescreen satellite TV, and a fully room-sealed Burley woodburner guarantee snug evenings in whatever the weather. Double French doors give onto a totally secluded, glass-balustraded private terrace which is a real suntrap from breakfast till sundown, with outdoor dining facilities and barbecue. Behind the terrace is a steep Devon bank full of wildflowers, roses and cotoneasters, with a small herb bed for guests' use. Paved steps lead down to the front door, while a grassy path winds up past the dovecot to a sheltered cider apple orchard with a trampoline and a grassy area perfect for a game of football, badminton or croquet. Horses, cats, chickens, Shetland sheep, and rare breed piglets provide feeding opportunities for animal-loving children (and adults!), while birdwatchers will delight in the abundance of visitors to our many tables and feeders – a visiting ornithologist recently identified over 50 species in and around the farm. And since we're barely a mile from the South West Coast Path, walkers (and their dogs) will not want for new routes to explore.

Appletree Cottage is one of three imaginatively converted farm buildings at Cotmore Farm. The others are Rose Cottage, a former stable block offering luxurious single-storey accommodation for two, and The Barn at Cotmore Farm, which accommodates 5 in two bedrooms, with a fabulous open-plan living space above, opening onto a private suntrap garden surrounded by green Devon banks. Both cottages have won the coveted TripAdvisor Award of Excellence.

Location description from owner

The England region

The South Hams, bordered by Plymouth to the West, Dartmoor to the North, and Torbay to the East, boasts some of the most unspoilt coastline on the south English coast: 60 miles of secluded bays and sheltered coves, including the promontories of Start Point, Prawle Point (Devon's most southerly spot) and Bolt Head. The entire coast, along with the lower Avon and Dart valleys, forms most of the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the vast majority of it is accessible to visitors and locals alike via the magnificent South West Coast Path. The area benefits from a very mild climate – winters are warm and wet, while spring and autumn are often glorious – making it a year-round destination. Summertime is reliably sunny, and in most years between June and September, every day is beach day, if that's your thing.

For those seeking more cerebral pleasures, the great Elizabethan maritime city of Plymouth, and the ancient Roman walled city of Exeter provide contrasting attractions: each has its complement of historic sites, stately homes, grand gardens and museums to visit. They also offer excellent shopping, elegant dining, a range of nightlife – including a vibrant live music scene – and award winning theatre at the Theatre Royal and the Northcott respectively.

Cotmore

Many miles of safe, award-winning beaches offer swimming, rockpooling, and sunbathing opportunities, while watersports – particularly surfing, windsurfing, sailing, waterskiing, scuba diving, and parasailing – are popular and widely available. Facilities for sailing, horseriding, tennis, and river- and sea fishing, not to mention two award-winning golf courses, are all within 30 minutes' drive of the property.

Walkers and their dogs will appreciate the attractions of miles of quiet lanes, footpaths, bridleways, and the renowned South Devon Coast Path, while stargazers will glory in the complete absence of artificial light, which makes the Milky Way regularly visible with the naked eye. The area is hugely popular with birdwatchers: Start Point is on a major migration route, Slapton Ley is an overwintering spot for rare overseas visitors, and the Cirl Bunting can be spotted at several locations on the farm.

South Devon is at the cutting edge of the Good Food revolution in the UK and there are superb eateries to be found in every town and village, with pub fare that would put many restaurants to shame. Fish and seafood are a speciality in the many fishing villages along the coast, and there are a number of establishments where you can pick your choice from the slab or tank and have it prepared, cooked and served to your table while you wait.

“Everything we wanted from our holiday and more.”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2016

Piers and Sue could not have been better hosts - they had thought of everything you might need and even provided a wonderful welcome pack. My husband and I loved the peace and tranquility of the place. The cottage has been beautifully renovated and we relaxed every evening in front of the wood burning stove. Our children (6 & 3) thoroughly enjoyed feeding the pigs, collecting eggs for breakfast, bouncing on the giant trampoline and running around in the fields. The farm is in a lovely setting in the hills and the sea is very close by. It is well situated for exploring a number of places in this stunning region and we can't wait to return. Thank you Piers and Sue for a fantastic holiday.

“Beautiful barn in lovely location”

Reviewed 23 Oct 2016

We spent 4 nights at the Barn. The barn has been converted to a high standard and is the best self catering accommodation we have stayed in. The kitchen is well equipped and the very efficient log burner kept us beautifully warm and cosy. The welcome hamper was very appreciated. Piers and Sue are very friendly and welcoming and there if you need them. This is a lovely area and being just over a mile from the sea, this is a great location.

“Fun time for all the family!”

Reviewed 10 Oct 2016

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights with our 1 1/2 yr old in September. I'm slightly reluctant when writing this review because we liked this place so much and will definitely be back so I just hope we we do come to book again word hasn't spread too far and it's all booked up! If you have kids then this is the place to be, the farm has a wonderful welcoming feel about it and you instantly are made to feel at home by Piers and his family. The only difference is your new home is full of the friendliest farm animals anyone could hope for! Our little girl loved it. There was never a dull moment. And for the adults the location is fantastic and very close to places like Bantham, Salcambe, BeeSands, Torcross Blackpool Sands and even Dartmouth and Totnes are only a short hop away. All in all a fantastic holiday, we will definitely be back!

“Cotmore Farm will never disappoint, a fantastic place.”

This was our second visit to Appletree Cottage and certainly will not be our last. My daughter and boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed their first stay, they enjoyed the well equipped cottage, location and feeding the piglets. A great escape from London. Piers and Sue are amazing hosts, thank you again for making our stay so memorable. Big cuddle to Jack who is the most adorable and friendly dog. See you all next year.

“Fantastic cottage”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2016

We had a super second stay in Appletree Cottage. Fantastic for children and adults alike. Our little ones loved daily visits to see the animals (the piglets were a particular highlight!) and there is loads to do in the local area for families. The cottage is superbly equipped, smart and very comfortable.

“Very high quality cottage in beautiful countryside”

Reviewed 8 Jul 2016

Spent a lovely week here in June 2016. The cottage is in excellent condition with high quality fittings and furniture, and is well equipped. It would have been even nicer if the weather had been better (!) but the terrace provides a sun-trap when the sun does shine. Piers and Sue were very friendly and helpful.

“Excellent base for a holiday in the South Hams”

Reviewed 7 Jul 2016

Extremely high standard cottage providing all you could possible need, including a great welcome tray of local goodies! Keen walkers will not be disappointed by what's on offer in this beautiful area, and there are plenty of options available directly from the cottage so it's perfectly possible to have a car-free day out or two. The owner provides a warm welcome and is on hand should he be needed. Don't hesitate to book!
