Description from owner

Description

Appletree Cottage, completed in May 2015, is our third and last farm building conversion at Cotmore Farm. It has the same stylish layout as the TripAdvisor award-winning Barn at Cotmore Farm, and the same level of finish: two large slate-floored bedrooms on the ground floor at courtyard level, one with a super-kingsize bed, the other either a twin or a super-kingsize, depending on configuration, and each with its own luxurious bathroom; bright and airy open-plan upstairs, with oak floors, vaulted ceiling, exposed beams, roof lights, fully equipped kitchen, comfy leather sofas, WiFi, woodburner; and direct access through double French doors to a private sun-trap garden terrace carved out of a green Devon bank, surrounded by steep banks filled with wildflowers, and a winding path leading up to the apple orchard. And of course you have all the amenities of the farm at hand: horses, piglets, chickens, sheep – endless entertainment for animal-loving children (and adults!).

Located at the very end of the farm courtyard, Appletree Cottage is accessed through a sturdy oak door which gives to an entrance hall dominated by a large bookshelf brimming with modern fiction, colour reference books and and an exquisite range of children's picture books that will provide endless evening or rainy-day diversion. To the left, another ledged oak door opens to a limestone bathroom, with P-shaped bath, Grohe power shower, wall-hung basin, curved towelrad with eco-switch, and discreetly located toilet. This family bathroom doubles, via an ingenious Jack-and-Jill arrangement, as ensuite to the master bedroom, the next room along, where a 6ft super kingsize oak bed takes centre stage, flanked by bedside tables with LED stay-cool reading lamps. Painted wooden shutters in the master bedroom and bathroom allow precise control of light ingress, and on hotter days allow a cooling breeze to circulate while maintaining absolute privacy. Across the corridor, a spacious second bedroom can be configured with two singles or one super-kingsize bed, with easily enough room to add a travel cot. Another ensuite bathroom boasts a huge walk-in enclosure with Grohe power-shower, wall-hung basin, sensor-switched vanity mirror, curved towelrad with eco-switch, and discreetly located toilet. All downstairs areas benefit from touch-sensitive underfloor heating, individually controllable in each room.

A glass balustraded staircase winds up to the first floor, a stunning open-plan room where the architecture of the vaulted roof and exposed trusses of ancient pitch pine combine to create a sense of airy space and light. Views to the south and east look over gently rolling hills towards the sea at Beesands, while to the north, a wall of glass positively invites the countryside in. To the left, a compact but fully equipped kitchen and comfortable dining area mean you can cook with confidence if you don't fancy going out; to the right, two comfy leather sofas, a widescreen satellite TV, and a fully room-sealed Burley woodburner guarantee snug evenings in whatever the weather. Double French doors give onto a totally secluded, glass-balustraded private terrace which is a real suntrap from breakfast till sundown, with outdoor dining facilities and barbecue. Behind the terrace is a steep Devon bank full of wildflowers, roses and cotoneasters, with a small herb bed for guests' use. Paved steps lead down to the front door, while a grassy path winds up past the dovecot to a sheltered cider apple orchard with a trampoline and a grassy area perfect for a game of football, badminton or croquet. Horses, cats, chickens, Shetland sheep, and rare breed piglets provide feeding opportunities for animal-loving children (and adults!), while birdwatchers will delight in the abundance of visitors to our many tables and feeders – a visiting ornithologist recently identified over 50 species in and around the farm. And since we're barely a mile from the South West Coast Path, walkers (and their dogs) will not want for new routes to explore.

Appletree Cottage is one of three imaginatively converted farm buildings at Cotmore Farm. The others are Rose Cottage, a former stable block offering luxurious single-storey accommodation for two, and The Barn at Cotmore Farm, which accommodates 5 in two bedrooms, with a fabulous open-plan living space above, opening onto a private suntrap garden surrounded by green Devon banks. Both cottages have won the coveted TripAdvisor Award of Excellence.

Getting around

Our nearest railway station is Totnes, some 40 minutes' drive away. It is on the main line between London and Penzance, which means hourly trains in both directions. The journey time to London Paddington is approximately 3 hours. Public buses run from Totnes station to Kingsbridge and Dartmouth, our nearest towns, and the Route 3 bus, which runs from Dartmouth to Kingsbridge and then on to Plymouth, stops in the village of Chillington, a mile from the farm. Most visitors come to Cotmore by car; we are approximately 50 minutes south east of Plymouth and some 70 minutes south west of Exeter. Once arrived, walking and cycling are popular ways to get around.

Interaction with guest

We like to welcome guests personally on arrival, show them in, and give a brief introduction to the farm and the area. After that, guests are left to their own devices, but we are never far away when needed, and can be found either in the Farmhouse, or about the place, tending to the livestock and carrying our our duties. We are always happy to recommend a walk to suit your level of adventurousness, a beach appropriate to the prevailing tide or wind direction, or a place to eat commensurate with your appetite and wallet!

“perfect cottage, perfect for our dogs and teenage girls”

Reviewed 28 Oct 2018

great location near Beason & Beesands. Good for exploring Start Bay, Salcombe and the west. the cottage has been beautifully modernised and extremely comfortable, with everything we could want or need. we would highly recommend this cottage for anyone wanting to explore the area.

“High quality accomodation in beuatiful country setting, very close to several great beaches”

Reviewed 21 Aug 2018

Appletree is clean, high quality barn conversion with lots of light surrounded by trees with glimpses of the nearby sea. it was such a refreshing, peaceful setting with a small private terrace where we ate every night and lots of additional space for our 8 and 11 year olds to run around in. The adults loved Hallsands and Beesands (very good pub and fish and chip takeaway on the beach just a few miles away) shingle beaches which are super quiet even in August - great for peace, swimming and fantastic views along the coast. We love the area for the choice of different types of beach, all so close together. The coastal walks here are some of the best we have done in the UK and the views from nearby Start point lighthouse had me mesmerised. We also spent lots of time at the sandy beaches of Bantham and Thurlestone which are less than half an hour drive and Mill Bay at less than 20 minutes away, an estuary beach with masses of sand and calm, sheltered waters. Loads to do in the area on top of this such as boat rides from Dartmouth, surfing, Crealy theme park in Exeter, steam trains. Sue and Piers were perfect hosts - welcoming and helpful but left us to it. Would definitely love to return.

“Appletree Cottage”

Reviewed 17 Aug 2017

We had a fantastic stay at Appletree Cottage, Piers and Sue are excellent hosts very helpful but not at all intrusive. The cottage itself is very light, airy and well equipped. The farm has numerous animals and was loved by our teenage daughters. Overall a great place for a family holiday and amongst the best places we have stayed at.

“Peaceful setting and good base”

Reviewed 23 Jun 2017

A lovely farm secluded but not far from days out and beaches. The accommodation is smart and modern. Owners very helpful. We cooked most evenings and had all the equipment we needed. Definitely recommended if you are looking for peace and tranquility with the option to drive out to towns/seaside (Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcombe) for the day.

“Rural escape”

Reviewed 14 Jun 2017

We had a fabulous half term week at Appletree Cottage. Property was very well designed and very comfortable for our family of 4. As previous reviewers have said, Piers and Sue let you get on with you own thing and explore the farm at leisure. When you need some local information they were always accessible and very helpful. Charming welcome hamper which got us hooked on their free range eggs! This is a wonderful corner of Devon with easy access to the coast which has some outstanding secluded coves and beaches. If you are into fish and chips then The Shack in Beesands is up there with the best. An excellent and very therapeutic holiday.

“A great place to stay”

Reviewed 3 Jun 2017

We stayed here on the May Day Bank holiday weekend, my parents stayed in Appletree Cottage with my brother and my families were metres away in The Barn. We had high expectations having booked based on all the positive reviews - happy to say our expectations were met. The farm setting and accommodation are fantastic, with the accommodation well laid out and to a high standard - we've previously stayed at 'At the Beach' in Torcross which is also great, but we preferred Cotmore Farm. Piers and Sue are very accommodating hosts, happy to give you as much or as little of their time as you prefer. The eggs from the farm are the best we've ever tasted and the sunshine on Saturday gave us the opportunity to BBQ some of the farm sausages which were delicious. The farm itself is well maintained, very clean and not a 'smelly farm'. The location is great, it's remote but we enjoyed a walk from the farm to Beesands for lunch at Britannia at the Beach. The Stokeley farm shop is just a short drive away and well stocked. We also had a fantastic Sunday lunch at the Thurlestone hotel.

“Home from home but top notch”

Reviewed 24 May 2017

All the amenities were first class and tasteful and we really enjoyed eating the contents of welcome basket and thoughtful 6 fresh eggs. We were not sight-seeing,as we were hunting down ancesters in the local parish churchyards,so we found some amazing villages that we would not otherwise visited such as Slapton,Chivelston,East Prawle,Chillington,Sherford (wonderful10th century church) and Thurlestone. The pub on the green at Prawle was a must see,and the food in the first Slapton pub was great.Wonderful atmosphere with all the locals as there was everywhere we went.Piers was very helpful in directing us to a ruined graveyard, just nearby near Ford, which had lovely views and peaceful. We loved the new born piglets on the farm, everywhere was welcoming. We loved the little chapel at Beesands as well. We had a very special holiday.Thank you .Teresa ,Mick and Sheila.

“Just what the doctor ordered, including sunshine for four days!”

Reviewed 2 May 2017

We were looking for somewhere to escape from our busy London lives and give our two children 5 and 3 a proper country experience. We got just that, a lovely barn conversion set in idyllic rambling countryside, so close to amazing beaches, Salcombe, Bantham (our favourite). But enough to do on the farm with Piers and his wife meeting us to allow the children to go and feed the animals at their feeding times. Collect eggs, stroke piglets, and bounce on a trampoline until the Devon fresh air took them to their lovely bedroom, to sleep soundly in the peace and quiet all night. Arriving late afternoon/evening to a gorgeous basket filled with local goodies really started our trip as it went on.

“Cotmore Farm”

Reviewed 1 May 2017

Another fantastic week at Cotmore Farm with Piers and Sue, who are excellent 'light touch' hosts, there when you need them but not otherwise. This is the second time we have stayed in two yrs and we have loved each time. Gorgeous comfortable conversion and a really stylish open plan cottage, with lovely sunny terrace. All mod cons and lovely welcome pack of goodies. Great being part of environmentally friendly farm and seeing lambs emerge and spring being sprung! Thank you we will be back!

“Everything we wanted from our holiday and more.”

Reviewed 27 Oct 2016

Piers and Sue could not have been better hosts - they had thought of everything you might need and even provided a wonderful welcome pack. My husband and I loved the peace and tranquility of the place. The cottage has been beautifully renovated and we relaxed every evening in front of the wood burning stove. Our children (6 & 3) thoroughly enjoyed feeding the pigs, collecting eggs for breakfast, bouncing on the giant trampoline and running around in the fields. The farm is in a lovely setting in the hills and the sea is very close by. It is well situated for exploring a number of places in this stunning region and we can't wait to return. Thank you Piers and Sue for a fantastic holiday.
