The Paphos District
Paphos, Cyprus, is in the western district of the island and is blessed with an average of 330 days of sunshine a year, allowing last minute holidays to be taken year round. The geographical diversity of the region, ranging from the coast, with soft sandy beaches, picturesque inlets and coves, to the hills and woodland of the Paphos forest, lends itself to visitors of many interests. Walking, cycling, sunbathing, golf, deep water fishing, bird watching or nature photography and a range of water sports are all available in Paphos, gaining the region a place on the UNESCO list of cultural and natural treasures.
Paphos town's turbulent past gives it a wealth of historic places of interest to visit, including the Byzantine Castle of Paphos, the Tombs of the Kings, and the remains of the Roman Governor's Palace with its fine mosaics, or the remains of the Temple of Aphrodite
Paphos Town is the capital of the region, and the mythical birthplace of Aphrodite the Greek Goddess of Love, and proves a popular destination for tourists.
Coral Bay is 11 kilometres (15 minutes drive) to the north of Paphos and 3 kilometres below the friendly, hillside village of Peyia is Coral Bay, the best natural beach in the area. This is an established resort above a wide curve of dark golden sand. The summer heat is often tempered by a gentle breeze, the sea has a shallow margin where children may play safely and, in the busier months, water sports on offer include pedaloes, water skiing, banana boats, and windsurfing.
Close by the Bay you will find four large hotels, banks, mini markets for provisions and souvenirs, bars, restaurants and other shops and, for casual alfresco meals, a couple of tavernas/snack bars overlooking the sea and a large restaurant in the next bay which is open during the day. More tavernas and local shops are a short drive away. A perfect location for a casual seaside holiday, this is also an excellent base for touring the Paphos area.
