Description from owner

Description

Once built as the post office for the village this cottage is now a comfortable home from home.

You'll see from the photographs taken 150 years ago that this end of the hamlet has hardly changed at all and you'll be able to compare the march of time with elsewhere in the county. The cottage is easily reached from both the A30 and the A390 but has hardly any traffic and the locals will often hold long conversations in the middle of the road. There are many quiet lanes and walks to explore in and around Coombe and the cottage comes with its own private woodland picnic area a few short steps from the front door, there is also a public football field with swings, slide and full size tennis court free for local use just 500 meters way through the hamlet.

Many original features like wood panelling, display cupboards, fire-places and other period features are preserved throughout the cottage making it an interesting and historic place to stay.

Some of our mining heritage can be seen around the village in the prominent form of the engine houses and smoke-stacks and indeed the front gate to the cottage was made by the master engineer of the Great Dowgas Mine (found at the top of the hill from the cottage) who used to boast that he could make anything from a pin to a Whim-Bar (which was the mechanism by which the mines were pumped dry).

Spectacular elm window seats draw your eye immediately upon entering the main living room and Air-conditioning keeps the cottage comfortable at all times.

The original polished wood floors in all the bedrooms lend a clean but warm feel to the cottage with the golden tinge that only 150 year old timber can give, the living room is oak floor, the snug maple and the kitchen tiled. Thick rugs keep things cozy for the toes and almost invisible secondary glazing on the original windows keep out the wildest weather.

There'll be a pint of milk in the fridge and if you'd like to arrange a grocery delivery at time of booking it will be put away in the kitchen for you free of charge ready for your arrival.

Speaking of arrivals here's a couple of minuets video to show you what it'll be like:

and here's the run to the village park (and quite a lot of the village on the way):

We strongly recommend talking to us before booking your holiday to ask any questions you might have and go over the type of holiday you expect. We've lived here a long time and have a lot of local knowledge so can help with a wide range of enquiries, everything from providing a lockable Garage for your vintage car if you're down for any of the many many vintage, steam and classic shows that run in the county from April to recommending local livery and farrier if you've brought your horse for exploring the countryside.

I will allow a well behaved pet provided you give prior notice and deposit, the pet has to be fully vaccinated and must have had Stronghold or similar flea treatment at the recommended intervals

No pets upstairs or left unattended in the cottage please.

Bedding is provided and changed either when you leave or by prior arrangement if your stay is more than one week. extra cleaning can be negotiated at your expense before your holiday but without forewarning the cleaning service may be booked up.

This was my and previous generations of my family's home so the history runs deep and I care about it tremendously. It is well tended and as a listed building it has many irreplaceable original features which make it such a unique holiday home and I hope you'll share in its history.

I would be grateful if care could be taken when staying that none of the 150 year old fittings, windows or features are forced and that if something doesn't work as you think it should a call be made to the on-hand maintenance/emergency number so that advice can be given or the fault rectified immediately.

There'll be tea, toilet rolls, salt, pepper and a few other bits and bobs so you'll not be caught short but we recommend you pack carefully and remember beach-towels wellington boots and bugblatter-beast repellent.

However there is a huge Asda only10 minuets away that sells everything from towels and DVD's to coffee makers and a farm store 5 mins away that has wellys, riding-crops and barber-jackets.

“Very comfortable - would stay again”

Reviewed 31 May 2015

Went down to Cornwall for the first May bank holiday with my girlfriend and stayed here - very comfortable and nice countryside for walks around. Just what I was after.
