Outside there is a small back yard and then a few steps across the road there is a large double garage - ideal for canoes, bikes, cars - lots of space for all your outdoor gear! The garage leads out to a patio and seating area in the garden with delightful views up to Coniston Old Man.

Please note that the stairs in the property are fairly steep so we have listed the property as only for the agile. If you are there for a walking holiday it will be ideal, but if you are disabled or frail it may not be entirely suitable.

Situated in the very heart of the Lake District, you simply do not need to venture outside of Coniston to have a truly delightful and memorable holiday. However, other parts of the Lakes are within very easy reach - Ambleside, Hawkshead, The Langdales - they are all within a short, breath-taking drive.

Location description from owner

The Duddon Valley region

Coniston is situated in the very heart of the Lake District and is a popular starting point for a number of truly memorable walks. Situated at the head of Coniston Water, the village has everything you need within close walking distance. There are five pubs in the village, lots of fantastic cafe's, convenience stores, independent shops including a butchers and greengrocers so you can stock up on all you need to make your stay at Puddleduck House special.

We think (and obviously we are biased) but Coniston has it all. It is a far cry from the crowded Windermere, and yet it is busy enough to ensure there is something to do for all the family. By the water's edge there are picnic benches, bike hire, boat and canoe hire, steam yacht gondolas and boat trips - to mention a few! Glorious walks to famous beauty spots and other, quieter walks can all be found directly from the house.

Coniston is surrounded by lakes, mountains and Grizedale forest and yet is also a short, idyllic drive to other famous Lake District attractions, such as Hawkshead, Ambleside, the Langdales - to name a few. A central stay in Coniston means you really can get to experience the best the Lakes has to offer.

Coniston

Within walking distance of Puddleduck House is Coniston Water and from there you can take a delightful sail up and down the lake, meandering around the inspiration for Arthur Ransome's famous book and film, Swallows and Amazons. You can also learn about Donald Cambell, the British speed record breaker who tragically died on the jet-powered boat, The Bluebird, while travelling at a speed of 300mph. A cafe, named after the famous boat, is situated at Coniston Launch and has a wide, glass front with panoramic views of the lake. And the food and cakes are very tasty too!

If you fancy a low-level walk, there are walks that are incorporated with your boat trip on the water - you can choose to get off at various jetties including stopping off at the home 'Brantwood' of the eminent Victorian Art Critic and Philospher John Ruskin. Then you can have a picnic, a saunter by the lake and then catch another boat back into Coniston.

For those that want to reach the heights, no visit to Coniston for them would be complete without a hike up the 2,633ft Coniston Old Man. From the top, on a nice day, you have panoramic views of all the surrounding mountains, including Scaffold Pike, Helvellyn, the Langdale Pikes, Wetherlam - to name drop a few of Wainwright favourites! You can also see right across to the sea and Morecombe bay. After a day out on the fells, be sure to stop off and reward yourself in any of the pubs or cafes as you head back down into the village!

One of our favourite walks is from Coniston to Torver, the next village along. The walk takes you along the water's edge and has spectacular views up and down the lake before climbing uphill to Torver and looking up at the stunning mountain scenery. Of course there is a good reason why this is our favourite walk - there is a very popular, welcoming pub in Torver, The Wilson Arms to reward you for your efforts!

Another popular walk is to Tarn Hows, the picturesque beauty spot. You can walk there from the house or drive a short distance and park up and saunter through fields, woodland, looking up at the mountains before suddenly stumbling upon the beauty of Tarn Hows. An early start makes the best of this gem of a walk - with the mist rising from the water.

“Puddleduck House, Coniston”

Reviewed 17 Dec 2016

The house is situated close to all village shops , pubs and bus stop . Rooms are well fitted and decorated, with a modern bathroom. The kitchen is well equipped and conveniently laid out. Outside, the garage will take two modest-sized cars, and leads to a small, pleasant garden with views up to the Coniston Old Man range. A good spot to lounge in the sunshine with a glass of something!. An excellent place to stay, particularly if the weather is good as it was for us all week.

“Comfortable and well thought out”

Reviewed 15 Dec 2016

We stayed for three nights with our three month old and had a great time. Very comfortable stay; fully equipped kitchen made it great for all our meals. If you like feeling at home when you go away, this place is for you. Highlights: roll-top bath, excellent kitchen, great decor Lowlights; wet wood from the garage; would have been nice to have 1 night of dry wood provided to make use of the log burner properly

Fantastic cottage, cannot recommend highly enough. Owner could not have been more helpful. Welcome package of cake and wine was left for us (cake was homemade and delicious). Definitely the jewel in the Crown of Coniston. Thank you for a lovely break away from it all. Kerry

“Brilliant Home and Location”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2016

We had a lovely week at this property, 6 adults and 2 dogs, it was home from home with every thing you could possibly need on holiday. There were hair dryers in each bedroom and the bathroom facilities where excellent with very good showers and comfortable roll top bath. Puddle Duck is in an excellent location for exploring the Lakes, we had some good walks with our dogs and had days out in Ambleside,Bowness on Windermere,Keswick We had a good Sunday Lunch in the Black Bull Pub and Sara's Indian was very good both in the village. We missed out at the Steam Bistro (unable to book a table we tried to book on the Wed to go Friday Evening so book early) if you fancy Chinese we had a lovely take away from Ambleside Lucky Dragon we used one of the thermal cool bags from the kitchen to keep it warm 20 mins drive away, also Wilsons was very good in Torver 10 mins drive away. All in All we had a great week, weather was pretty good too which was a bonus in the Lakes. Coniston has some brilliant views throughout the whole area, I would definitely use this property again and recommend to family and friends.Thank you Chloe

Thank you so much for posting such a lovely review! I'm so pleased you had such a good time - it seems as though you definitely made the most of the week! We'd be delighted to have you back at Puddleduck House :) All the very best, Chloe x

“Excellent - our second stay here”

Reviewed 3 Aug 2016

Lovely house, very homely, well equipped, warm and cosy and in warm weather nice and airy with the windows open - not stuffy at all. The owner is very helpful and lovely to deal with, the housekeeper was also lovely (we arrived a little early and she made us tea in the garden). I don't recommend arriving early though as even though she was very lovely and accommodating, she was still very busy cleaning the huge house :-) The description makes you think it is a little cottage when in fact is is a large house with plenty of space for the larger families. Plenty of room. Great eating area for the family and plenty of space and equipment to cook with. The garden is a sun trap and very peaceful. The main village is less than 2 minutes walk and all the shops and pubs are just on the doorstep. The walks in the area are beautiful and the owner has provided lots of books to help you find the best walks for you. This was our second stay and will be returning again :-)

What a lovely review - thank you so much!! You've been a pleasure to deal with on both visits and I very much look forward to hearing from you again :)) Chloe x
