Location description from owner

The Costa del Sol region

Competa sits in the region of Axarquia, east of Malaga,  Axarquia  is bordered by the Mediterranean to the south and mountains, which shelter the area, to the north. The region retains all the charm of yesteryear thanks to unspoilt havens and attractive coves and beaches where bathers can flee the crowds to be found to the west of Malaga.  Axarquia is one of the few areas to still feature beaches that have managed to escape the all-consuming urban development that has invaded other parts of the Mediterranean coast.

Major attractions are the spectacular unspoilt countryside and coastal villages. The hill and mountain scenery are ablaze with flowers and blossom from January onwards.

Competa

Competa is situated in the Axarquia region, a beautiful whitewashed Andalusian village amidst the majestic mountainscape of the Sierra Almijara. Long known as the pearl of the Axarquía it is located seven hundred metres above sea level with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, countryside and Mediterranean,

The village has Moorish roots, evident in the style of the village, with its winding, narrow streets and peaceful squares.

Regarded as one of the most beautiful of the pueblos blancos (white villages) Competa is located 20 kilometres north of the Andalusian coastline, home to many beautiful beaches, a car journey of half an hour. It is just 53 kilometres form the centre of Malaga and the airport, about an hour’s drive away. With both the mountains and the coast close by, there is plenty of opportunity to experience both the traditional and the more contemporary side of Andalusia.

If you are looking for natural beauty then Competa and the Axarquia region are perfect for you.

The village is surrounded by olive groves and almond trees, which blossom in the spring. Competa is situated beside a 4,000 hectare wildlife reserve, which incorporates the Sierra Almijara, rising majestically to 2,000 metres above sea level.

The landscape leading down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive and lemon groves, tropical fruits such as kiwi and mango, and views so sublime you will never want to leave. The area is particularly popular with wildlife enthusiasts and bird watchers, who come to marvel at the eagles that roam the skies.

Competa is a bustling village all year round. There are more than 30 restaurants and bars and the local people are famously friendly and hospitable. Throughout the year there are many fiestas when locals and visitors get together to enjoy the rich culture of the area.

Typical cuisine of the area consists of rice, seafood and meats, combined with delicious fresh, local vegetables. Competa has many cafés, restaurants and tapas bars to choose from, whether you fancy a formal or informal meal. In some of the more traditional tapas bars you can order a caña (small beer) or glass of Rioja and enjoy a free tapas. If self-catering is your thing, Competa is self sufficient and thriving with a municipal market for example with a fresh daily supply of meat fish and vegetables

One of the most popular annual fiestas here is the Noche del Vino (Night of the Wine) on the 15th August which features a programme of flamenco and sevillana music and dance, plus plenty of free-flowing vino.

Competa enjoys a sub-tropical Mediterranean climate of hot summers and warm winters with an average of 300 days of sun a year. The proximity to the sea affords cooling breezes in the summertime; the height of the mountains in the region are often snow-topped in the winter, a beautiful sight to behold in the far south of Europe
