Competa

The Villa is just a short distance (10 minutes) fromThe white washed village of Competa, known locally as the 'Pearl of the Axarquia'. Easily approached by a good tarmac road . (Many villas in the area have long, pot holed dirt roads that require a 4X4). Competa is nestled 700 metres above sea level in the Sierra Almijara, the snow capped (in winter) range of mountains between Malaga & Granada that stretch down to the warm Mediterranean.

A delightful medium-sized white Spanish village, with white washed walls that reflect the beautiful summer sun, on doors, windows and walls throughout village

Competa village is surrounded by a 4,000 hectares wide wildlife reserve, the Sierra Almijara, with peaks as high as 2,068 metres. A stunningly beautiful natural park where you can go for walks to encounter mountain
goats, eagles and a very rich vegetation. Yet, the sandy beaches and coastal villages of Axarquia are also very near. Competa has 35 bars and restaurants offering excellent tapas and meals at low prices.

The area of Competa has one of the best climates in Europe, and the land surrounding the village and down to the coast is filled with vineyards, olive, almond and lemon groves, tropical fruits such as avocado, mango and kiwi, all idealy suited to this sub tropical climate. The locally produced Moscatel wine is famous throughout the region. You can visit one of the bodegas and taste it yourself!

The region is renowned for it's muscatel grape and the infamous Vino de Competa. For this reason the routes through the villages are named 'The Route of the Wine'. This takes you through the villages of Torrox, Algarrobo,
Sayalonga, Competa, Canillais de Albaida, Nerja and Frigliana. To the north of this Provence of Malaga lies the Provence of Granada.

“The Perfect 'Get Away From It All' Location.”

Reviewed 28 Jun 2016

My wife and I stayed in Casa Abajo for two weeks in September 2015 and had the most peaceful, relaxing and wonderful time together. We enjoyed the villa and the location so much that I booked the villa again for a week at the beginning of May as a birthday present for my wife. I don't know where to start with my explanation as to how this region of Spain has become so special to us, but as for the villa that's much easier. First of all, if you are seeking to get away from it all, enjoy the company of your wife, family or friends and don't mind not being too close to towns or villages, then this location should be right up your street. The approach to the villa is down a steep hill. It looks daunting to drive on but it's not a problem to a competent driver and after a couple of journeys it never crosses your mind again. The villa itself is very spacious, clean and comfortable. With WiFi connection and satellite tv available to keep in contact with what's going on in the world. The kitchen is very well appointed and has everything anyone could reasonably need to cook a decent family meal. Likewise, the large bathroom is spotless and includes a washing machine, should anyone feel compelled to do their washing before going him. We found that both the kitchen and bathroom were well stocked, probably as a result of previous occupants leaving food and washing products behind them when they left. On one occasion we had a problem with the toilet and after one call to the owner Simone, who was very pleasant and helpful at all times, a plumber an hour or so later and repaired it. The pool, which is on a different level to the main villa, is perfect and the amenities around the pool - chairs, soft sunbed cushions, toilet and fridge - important for keeping the Cruzcampo cool mean there is no need to interrupt precious sun time by having to make frequent trips to the villa during the day. The owners also have a cat and they ask simply that the cat is fed and watered. The food is provided, so it's not an onerous task. Finally, this is a beautiful villa which the owners clearly take great pride in. It suits us perfectly and we intend to visit again. So, if you want to spend some quality time with the one you love, or want to genuinely experience Spain properly with family or friends, then this definitely is the place to visit. We loved it and, unless you are difficult to please, I imagine that you'll love it too. Pat & Catherine Belfast

“Amazing views in lovely Competa”

Reviewed 17 Jun 2013

Excellent value for money!! Stayed for 11 days in this lovely house in May and were sad to leave. It's a house that is loved and being lived in. Beautiful gardens, a large pool and amazing views. Surrounded by mountains you can look all the way to the Med. We were met by the owners Simone and her husband Rob in the beautiful village of Competa. We have rented a number of villa's over the years, but never before did we feel so welcome. On arrival not a welcome pack, but everything was simply there: coffee, tea, water, oil, and much more. Many dvd;s, books and more towels than we needed. You don't even have to bring your own pool towels. Competa is a beautiful village with a number of groceries, restaurants to every taste and a tourist information office. We wholeheartedly recommend this property to anyone who doesn t want to stay in the racket of the coastal towns. Simone and Rob, thank you so much for the warm welcome and a lovely holiday. We will certainly return and if you ever come our way you are more than welcome. Carin and Aad
