Location description from owner

The Costa del Sol region

The Axarquia

The Axarquia is a historic region of Andalusia located in the eastern corner of the province of Malaga. It stretches from the provincial border between Malaga and Granada in the east (close to the town of Nerja) until the city of Malaga in the west. Velez –Malaga is its largest and most influential town nestled between the Mediterranean Sea and the Sierra Tejeda. Historically the town has been of some importance to the region as a whole and been the focus of power struggles between the Catholic Kings and the Moors with far reaching consequences. In 1487 it was conquered by King Fernando providing an important base for the further conquest of Malaga after almost 800 years of Moorish rule.

The highest peak in the region is the 2000m mountain “La Maroma” which directly overlooks its capital and dominates the landscape. Numerous rivers run through the territory including the Velez, Torrox, Chillar and Higuerón and combined with the mild weather associated with the area mean it’s an excellent location for agriculture. The Axarquia valley is full of fruit groves but it’s not just fruit that is produced here. The variety of locally grown foods is truly astonishing. Olives, almonds, avocados and tomatoes, just to mention a few are all commonly cultivated here.

The towns clearly show their Moorish heritage with picturesque narrow white streets, central squares and historical monuments. The terracing of the landscape also reflect this past.

The coastline of the Axarquia is a mix of beaches, cliffs, coves and headlands with watchtowers dotted along the length of the shoreline. These were erected in the late 16th century to spot pirate ships and warn the locals and other towns along the shore of Moorish raiding parties.

This part of the Costa del Sol still retains much of its charm whilst opening its doors to visitors. With less development and commercialization visitors get a better taste of Andalusia and a chance to soak up more of its history and culture whilst having the opportunity to enjoy all the benefits of a relaxing beach getaway. With all this taken into account, the Axarquia really is worth a visit.

Competa

Competa

Competa is situated 49 kilometres from Malaga and 18 kilometres from the coast at Torrox Costa, at an altitude of 636 metres. It lies within the area of
Axarquia in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara, on the scenic Route of Sun and Wine, and has a population of 2,500.The area is irrigated by numerous springs and streams from the surrounding mountains. The nearby Casa de la Mira Nature Reserve is spectacularly beautiful. The main product here is the grape; the wines of Competa being excellent and renowned throughout Spain. In general the locals prefer the sweet variety whilst visitors prefer the dry.

There is an interesting wine museum in the village that sells different types of local produce and handicrafts, as well as doubling as a bar and restaurant. Annually on the 15th August there is a popular Fiesta to celebrate the 'Night of the Wine'; flamenco and other music and dance accompany the free-flowing wine. The 'Night of the Wine' is a very old traditional party which has been celebrated for a long time. Traditionally the inhabitants of Competa went to their cortijos (farmhouses) up in the mountains during the vintage and didn't return until October, when the raisins were packed and the grapes had been pressed.

On August the 15th they met at Plaza Almijara for a farewell party, where they sang and danced fandangos and drank the famous local wine. Being highly significant for the people of Competa, the party was made official in 1975. It is now organised by the local council and includes a programme by which visitors can get in touch with local traditions. During the morning of August 15th, there is demonstration of 'la pisa de la uva' (treading on grapes). There follows a free country-style lunch with 'migas de harina' (garlic and meat cooked with flour crumbs), sardines, rural salad (peppers, oranges, onions, olives and tomatoes) and chorizo sausages. Both the pisa and the lunch are accompanied by local musicians. The party continues into the evening until the early hours of the next morning with music and dance around the Plaza Almijara. Competa is a pretty village which has retained its original Moorish layout and has lots of interesting nooks and crannies, with a good balance of shops, bars and restaurants.

The magnificent parish church of La Asunción, in the main square of Plaza Almijara, was built in the 16th century in Baroque-Mudejar stlye.

“Stunning villa set in dramatic countryside, perfect holiday”

Reviewed 13 Oct 2013

This was our second stay at the Casablanca Villa. This is a beautifully kept and idyllic villa, nestling in the Andalusian mountains, with wonderful scenic views. The villa also has a plunge pool. The villa and all outside amenities are extremely well kept and spotlessly clean. The villa has a rustic feel but with all mod cons - English TV was great too!! . There is an English bar/restaurant within walking distance of the villa which sells good quality pub-style meals. The nearest town, Competa, is a pleasure to walk around and has a very Spanish feel to it. There is a good selection of restaurants specialising in local Tapas. The roads leading to the villa are quite windy, but each one brings another spectacular view.

“Well appointed villa in a peaceful location. Highly recommended.”

Reviewed 11 Jul 2013

I have stayed at Villa Casablanca twice with a third booking on the cards for 2014 which shows how highly I rate it. It has everything you need for a "home-from-home" holiday and is located in a quiet area on the outskirts of Competa. The villa is furnished in traditional Spanish style which gives it a rustic feel. The three bedrooms are spacious and there are two bathrooms (one is an ensuite shower room to the master bedroom and the other is a full bathroom positioned between the 2nd and 3rd bedrooms). The lounge/diner is open plan to the kitchen. There is no air conditioning but fans are supplied and if you open up all the windows there is a generally a through breeze anyway. A car is necessary as although the nearest restaurant (El Pavo) is within walking distance, Competa village is a lovely place and has a wide variety of good restaurants to choose from. The property managers are based locally so if there are any problems they are only a phone call away. I had to call them once to find out information about the local doctor's surgery which was very helpful at the time! The outside space has wonderful views across the valley and includes a large outside dining area, a pool and a sunbathing area. There is also a BBQ for those evenings where you want to just relax and chill out for the evening. If you want a get away from it all vacation, you won't go wrong by choosing to stay at Villa Casablanca.
