At the end of Combwich village, right next to the Parrett Trail, an ancient stone barn beautifully converted into a pretty cottage. Snug behind the owners' pretty farmhouse, it has rural views of an orchard and horse paddock (which you are welcome to wander and make use of the summer house - good views of the estuary, Brent Knoll and Wales beyond) and also a busy wildlife pond (unfenced). A very peaceful spot. One hundred yards from the cottage is access to the 400 hectare Steart Peninsula wetland nature reserve with panoramic viewpoints and wildlife observation hides, excellent for cycling, walking and birdwatching.

Inside, all on one level, lots of light, clean lines and contemporary furniture. Open-plan living/dining area with TV/DVD, beams to apex and French windows (step) to small, enclosed garden (table/chairs, good for morning sun). Neatly fitted kitchen (dishwasher, microwave, fridge, electric cooker). Two bedrooms – a double (5' bed), and a twin. Shower-room (wet-room suite). Utility area (washing machine) in neighbouring barn. No children under 8, except pre-crawling babies, due to pond. A great year-round spot for a relaxing break and fantastic for 'twitchers'.

The Somerset region

West Somerset: A mellow landscape of lush water-meadows, golden-stone villages, luxuriant cottage gardens and apple orchards. Here is some of the richest farmland in England, wonderfully peaceful and unspoilt. To the south is Hamstone country where almost every village is picture-perfect with stone cottages, old pubs and splendid churches and every few miles magnificent houses and gardens (many National Trust) are open to the public. At Yeovilton is the excellent Fleet Air Arm Museum with Concorde on show. Atmospheric Ham Hill has an Iron Age fort on its top.

The Quantocks are the beautiful hills – high against the farming vales to either side – stretching over 40 square miles from Taunton, Somerset's capital, to the big sandcastle beaches by the Bristol Channel sea, separated from Exmoor by a plain of cornfield farmland. Wooded, heather-topped, they are home to red deer and inspired poets Wordsworth and Coleridge. Superb for walking and riding, you'll find tremendous views, deep romantic valleys and rose-clad cottages here. Along the western foot of the Quantocks chugs the scenic steam railway from Bishop's Lydeard to Minehead.

Few beautiful-country areas are so rich in interesting and splendid man-made things to see.

Combwich: pretty Quantock village (PO/shop, pub) on the bank of the River Parrett, 4 miles inland from the Bristol Channel and Bridgwater Bay nature reserve - splendid for walkers and birdwatchers. Bridgwater (and the M5 - so easy access), 5 miles. Sandy beaches at Burnham (13 miles) or Minehead (20 miles).
