Location description from owner

The Occitanie region

The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate - meaning hot, sunny and relatively dry summers and mild winters along the coast. The region is known for its diversity of local produce and has many delicious local dishes to try. The region is one of the world's greatest in wine-making, with seemingly every village having a cooperative wine cellar.

There are many historical and architectural sites to be visited in the region with Perpignan being the main city.

Located between the rocky coast and extraordinary dells with terraced vineyards Collioure is an excellent location for exploring the many interesting places in the surrounding Lanquedoc-Roussillon region. It was the cradle of Fauvism, with great artists such as Matisse and Derain; its beauty and light have been the joy of many artists, painters, writers, and photographers.

The harbour was already active in the Antiquity, a beginning point for trade and prosperous commerce, especially with the Majorcan and Aragon kings, who restored the castle and made it their summer residence.
From 981 on, the counts of Roussillon and the kings of Majorca began to develop Collioure and build a fortress which was used as the summer residence for the kings of Majorca from 1276 to 1344.
Throughout the entire 13 th century, many crusaders passed through Collioure, e.g. the knights of the Templar order (hence the famous legend of the treasure of the Templars) in 1207, the Cistercians in 1242, and the Dominicans in 1280.

Collioure

Collioure today is the jewel village of the Vermeille Coast with its small bay, pied boats, mazy streets, military fort and the little flour-mill built high up.Collioure has always been a source of inspiration for artists. writers, poets, singers and painters fell under Collioure’s charm. That is also why Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy Chagall, Marquet, and many others set up their easels here and immortalized the small Catalan harbour in their works. With approximately thirty galleries and many artists from the entire world, Collioure still is the ”City of Painters.”

In the immediate area there are 3 very good beaches and the village is composed of a delightful maze of narrow streets with cafes, bars, artists' galleries and shops. There are many walks through the foothills of the Pyrenees through beautiful vineyards and olive groves.

There are regular boat trips to Port Vendres, Banyuls or Argeles sur Mer.

In summer there are a variety of concerts , fetes and street theatre. A fabulous market is held every Wednesday and Sunday.

The Spanish border is located close to Collioure and the town of Figueres, which houses the Dali museum, is only a 30 minutes car trip away.

“Excellent Villa”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2016

A beautifully appointed villa with a great view! We all really enjoyed our stay in this very comfortable and clean villa. I particularly appreciated the fact that there were little things like washing up liquid, soap, salt & pepper and washing powder! You may laugh, but those of us who regularly rent find stuff like that a real bug bear!!! The terrace was great in the heat, giving us a nice breeze. The air-con was perfect too!

Owner's reply: Thanks Sally I am delighted that you had a wonderful holiday in beautiful Collioure --no doubt the magic of this unique village will draw you back again Thanks Ray
