The Lake Como region

Lake Como - The Perfect Choice!

Lake Como has been a popular retreat for aristocrats and wealthy people since Roman times, and a very popular tourist attraction with many artistic and cultural gems. It has many villas and palaces (such as Villa Olmo, Villa Serbelloni, and Villa Carlotta). Many famous people have or have had homes on the shores of Lake Como, such as Matthew Bellamy, Madonna, George Clooney, Gianni Versace, Ronaldinho, Sylvester Stallone, Julian Lennon, Richard Branson, Ben Spies, and Pierina Legnani. Lake Como is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in Europe.

Truly beautiful ! Those words do not do this part of Italy justice. This jewel in the crown of Italy's famous lakes is a haven of tranquility, superb cuisine, majestic snow capped mountains, courteous folk and style. In his 'Charterhouse of Parma' Stendhal described it as an "enchanting spot, unequaled on earth in its loveliness." Virgil called it simply "our greatest" lake.

Como is in Lombardy, 45km North of Milan and in the Province of Como. Como is at the tip of the southwestern branch of this lake. Como is only a few miles from the Swiss border and 20 minutes from Lugano.

Lake Como is 50 km long and west of Menaggio is where the lake splits in two. The mountains around the lake are 2000 m high and the lake up to 1350 feet deep, making it one of the deepest lakes in Europe.

When visiting Como, there are places to see and things to do. Like most Italian towns off the beaten track, these are not always obvious.

Colico

Colico Lake Como is a sunny, lively place with good restaurants, bars and discotheque. The center of Colico with small shops and lakeside beaches are within walking distance or easily reached by bicycle.

In Colico there are great shopping opportunities and about 1 km outside of Colico is the large shopping center Fuentes.Colico offers a multitude sports activities such as tennis, sailing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, motor boating, swimming, etc.
The village of Colico is also an ideal starting point for hiking and mountain biking. From the pier you can reach the most beautiful places of the lake.

Colico is located on the north-eastern shore of Lake Como, at the feet of Legnone Mountain, (2609MT.) Colico is composed of the areas of Villatico, Curcio, Laghetto and Olgiasca (Abbey of Piona) and has three main beaches, two of them are in Colico, the other one is in Piona.

From the small local train station you go direct to Milan (with lake-panorama) or towards Chiavenna / Sondrio. Well connected to the eastern side of the lake also by trains that run mostly every hour. Further there is a boat station, from where you can reach all the major towns of the lake.
Within a short drive from Colico you can easily reach Valtellina, Lecco, Milan, San Moritz and Lugano.

There is a windsurf school where you can take lessons, rent surf boards and surf equippment. There are tennis courts, possibility to go horse riding (American style), or rent mountain bikes. A beatiful cycling route along the river Adda bring you from Colico to Morbegno. From Colico you can set out for excursions in the mountains with or without tourist guide enjoying one of the most beautiful and original landscapes of the lake.

Conquered by the Spaniards, Colico still preserves military forts that represent a must for tourists that come to visit Colico. It is also reccommended a walk on the lakefront and a stop in one of the cafes or restaurants of the main square that offer typical Italian dishes and local wine. In the areas of Curcio and Laghetto you can find the “CROTTI”, small restaurants built in the caves of the mountain.
