The Poitou-Charentes region
This region is the second sunniest region of France after the French Riviera. It is renowned for its production of Cognac and also the aperitif Pineau - a mixture of cognac and grape juice! As well as the larger Cognac concerns such as Henessy and Martell, there are many smaller producers who welcome visitors for tastings.
The region is covered with rolling hills of vineyards, interspersed with fields of sunflowers and is the home of Charentais melons which can be bought directly from the fields when in season.
The River Charente winds its way through this department and offers relaxing walks along its banks. Fishing is a favourite pastime here as well as boat trips along the river.
The Atlantic coast has wonderful sandy beaches, many of which are lined with pine forests, such as at La Palmyre where one of the best zoos in Europe can be found. The nearest beach at Royan is only 45 minutes away!
Talmont with its streets full of Hollyhocks is a delight to visit, as is Mornac- sur- Seudre. Both being listed as one of the prettiest villages in France.
La Rochelle and the Ile de Re with its famous bridge are well worth a day trip, as are Bordeaux and St. Emilion in the opposite direction.
La Chapelle- des- Pots between St. Sulpice de Cognac and Saintes is steeped in pottery history and houses a pottery museum and factory. Also nearby at St Cesaire there is an interesting museum of the Neanderthal age. The skull of a woman from this era was discovered here some years ago.
For the young there is a water park at Jonzac and Futuroscope in Poitiers is a cinema theme park and worth a day trip. In fact the list of places to visit and things to do is endless!
Cognac is a pleasant town on the Charente river and has a medieval quarter. Here can be found a Chateau where King Francois I was born. The chateau now belongs to the Otard cognac house and is an interesting place to visit.
There are several cafes and restaurants in Cognac mainly round the main square and a cobbled pedestrian area with shops. The Jardin public offers pleasant surroundings for a stroll or a picnic.
There is a small port on the river in Cognac and boat trips, notably on the Dame Jeanne ( a reconstructed wooden boat of former times, used to transport goods along the river) provide a relaxing and peaceful way to enjoy the surrounding scenery.
Hennesy is also to be found along the banks of the Charente and their visits include a short boat trip to the opposite bank to visit the chais which store barrels of cognac.

"Fabulous house classically french with everything necessary for a great stay"
We had a lovely stay at Clos Fleuri which was exceptionally well equipped and well managed, would be hard to find a fault. We loved the typically french building which was very spacious and in a very relaxing location. The pool was also a highlight being private and quiet, with a gorgeous surrounding patio where we could eat out every night. Would definitely recommend this property to all our friends. The only downside was we didnt manage to find a local cafe/bar in walking distance.
